Ulog #5: Inauguration of the Red Card Movement in Ikorodu, a Lagos Suburb, Nigeria.

I had a really really stressful day. A few hours ago, I was at the inauguration of the Red Card Movement in Ikorodu, a small town on the fringe of Lagos. I was one of the organizers, so I was already on ground, alongside other executives, before the campaign and awareness started.

What is the Red Card Movement?

The Red Card Movement is a civil society movement which was established in January 2018 to politically educate Nigerian electorates ahead of the 2019 General Elections. Our aim is to ensure that more Nigerians get involved in the political process, so that they can use their voting powers to red card bad governance and corrupt politicians in 2019.

Highlights of the Events

We kicked off the event at exactly 2pm with the Nigerian national anthem. Thereafter, Mr. Beckley, the Lagos State coordinator of the movement came on stage and gave a thrilling speech about Nigeria, about bad leadership, about the reason why everyone needed to be involved in the political process.

After Mr. Beckley's speech, my very good friend, who is famously known as De Voice, came on stage and emphasized how politically apathetic citizens indirectly vote bad leaders into government. He admonished the audience to get their Voter's card and ensure that their voices are heard in 2019.

Afterwards, other speakers came on stage and delivered great and moving speeches. When it was my turn to speak, I declined. I declined not because I didn't have things to say. I declined to speak because I would not want to shed tears on stage. I declined because the troubles with Nigeria are choking and cannot be addressed in a five minutes speech.

What Did Red Card Achieve Today?

Political education. We were able to educate a vast majority of the public on the dangers of political apathy and blind voting. Another major achievement was that we were able to register over a 100 new members who declared their readiness for a better Nigeria through their voting powers.

We closed our campaign with great songs about Nigeria from the late Fela Kuti, the Afro Beat legend. And as soon as people heard Fela's songs, they felt inspired and were even more ready to bring about positive change by performing their civic responsibilities.

Although I arrived home really exhausted, I am happy that I am part of the Red Card Movement. I am happy that I am not just writing and talking about the bad governance in Nigeria; I am actively involved in the process of birthing a new Nigeria. God bless Nigeria. God bless you and I. God bless the Red Card Movement.

Very nice initiative and good work :) Hope the next election goes well !

Thanks @Clausewitz. I hope it does go well too.

That is awesome. Education about elections is so important. I wish there were a way to keep the corrupt out, unfortunately I'm not sure that will ever happen. But to educate communities and individuals is so important. Great work my friend.
