Chakma- the largest tribal community in Bangladesh: Part-2
This is the second part of my three parted story named 'Chakma-the largest tribal community in Bangladesh'.
After the independence of Bangladesh, in the light of the historical realities of Chittagong Hill Tracts and the distinct anthropological features, MP Manabendra Narayan Larma summed up the demand for regional autonomy and formed the movement of Jumma people of different languages of Chittagong to go on different leadership. The movement that is currently stagnant. It was possible to stop this movement acfter the independence of Bangladesh, in the light of the historical realities of Chittagong Hill Tracts and the distinct anthropological features, MP Manabendra Narayan Larma summed up the demand for regional autonomy and formed the movement of Jumma people of different languages of Chittagong to go on different leadership. The movement that is currently stagnant. It was possible to stop this movement according to the peace agreement signed in 1997. Chakmas and other tribals have seats in the three-hill district councils, which are preserved. Of these, 5 general and 1 female seats in the Chittagong Hill Tracts Regional Council are reserved for Chakmas.10, 9, and 1 seats are reserved for the district council of Rangamati, Bandharban and Khkhargachari respectively.
As a result of the peace agreement, there is a minister from the Chakmas in Chittagong Hill Tracts Ministry is precedent. Many Chakma people have been elected as Chairman and commissioner in municipalities in three Hill districts. Chakma women wear a type of waist belt named Bain. Women's clothing includes pins, khadi busts, cages, turbans, alam (design specimens). In this case, the 'alam' is not a wearing product, a cloth of variety of colors and designs. Chakma women used to wear ornaments made of gold, silver and elephants, chants, coins, necklaces and balars. They also wear nose pin.
They use timber and bamboo made items as utensils. Besides, they use utensils like daba, funi, kulo, bijon, mazar etc. They eat kebang, that burns in kalapata or fire is a kind of sabzi. The food cooked with bamboo is called Garang. They like shutki, shrimp fish, too. Sekiya is mixed with salt pepper turmeric, it is eaten in different pistachios, which they eat.
That's all for today. Hopefully, i will be back with the last and final part of this story. Till then be healthy.
