Burano - unique island off Venice with colored houses

Burano is a unique, and very colorful island which is located about 7kms from Venice, an can be accesses by water taxi taking about 40 minutes. We actually visited Burano twice - the first time we visited we made the mistake of visiting mid afternoon, and there were ALOT of tourists! Burano is not a big island and to get the most of it we decided to take an early taxi and visit again - something I would highly recommend!

Beautiful house and canals in Burano

What is truly unique about Burano is that the houses are all different colors. We were told that if a home owner wants to paint their house they have to apply to the council, and are then given a choice of colors they can choose from. What a cool way of keeping the island looking tip top - I can see why its a major place for people to visit. It makes a great day trip from Venice!

Lovely and peaceful!

As I mentioned we visited early in the morning, and it was actually quite amazing watching this place come to life - watching the locals wake up and hang out their washing before(yes there is alot of washing here hanging from house to house!) the masses of tourists arrive. I can imagine that not all the locals would love the tourists taking over their little piece of paradise. In saying that their economy probably thrives and survives on tourism.

Small alleyways everywhere

Much like in Venice, Burano has little alleys everywhere and it sometimes seems like a bit of a maze! It is really fun to just wander around and explore the nooks and crannies of this cool island.

Picturesque!

Houses like a rainbow...

There are a few food options on Burano, but they are very touristy and thus expensive. I would recommend going on a full stomach and only having a snack and a coffee there if you are on a budget.

Although Burano isnt a massive island I would still reccomend at least half a day (incuding ferries) to explore and fully take in this trule unique island.
