Venice - Our Trip Part 1

in #travel6 years ago (edited)

Hello Steemians,

last week we traveled to the beautiful Italian city Venice. In this post we want to share and exchange some experiences and pictures with you. So, if you already were there, let us know how you liked it in the comments! :)

How we got there

We booked a flight from Germany to the airport in Venice. From the next big town here in Germany (which is Stuttgart/Stoccarda) it was not even an one-hour flight, only around 55 minutes. If you don't know yet: Venice is not only the group of islands which are well known for everyone. Also a part of the emerged land and many other smaller and bigger islands are part of Venice. So the Marco-Polo-airport in Venice is on the emerged land and you need another transportation to get into "the city Venice".
We decided to book a water-taxi which is not the cheapest option but the most comfortable and a great start to enter the city. It was an awesome experience to rush into the city with a little speedboat. IN the city are tempo-limits (5-6 km/h) for the boats and the private water-taxi brings you directly to the nearest point to your hotel.

Optional you can take the bus, train or let's call it a water-bus, but then you need to carry your bags the long way through the small lanes to your hotel. We would recommend to take the water-taxi in a bigger group or share it with some other people, then you can share the costs but also have the comfort.

Our hotel

We stayed the 4 nights in the small and lovely Hotel Alle Guglie in the north of the city. The breakfast was a little less and if all guests would have decided to go to breakfast at the same time the room for it would have been to small. But... it was enough for us and there are more than enough possibilities outside to get fruits and food.
The receptionist was a lovely lady which explained us everything we wanted to know and even booked us a table in a restaurant when we asked her for a good one in the near. She is definitely the reason why we can recommend this little hotel to everyone who visits Venice because of the city and not because of the hotel.

After arriving on Thursday evening we went to a little restaurant near the hotel (not that central) and had a great dinner. Just as a little rule of thumb: the more far you are away from the San Marco areal, the cheaper you can eat or buy things ;)

First day

On Friday we started our day early in the morning around 6am to experience the city without the masses of tourists. We dressed and left the hotel without a breakfast (which just started at 8am) and ambled to the Piazza San Marco. You can see the locals go to work or watch the hawker building up their stands and the streets are very empty compared to 2 hours later. Also the temperature is very comfortable and not that hot and sticky than in the noon.
After drinking a cappuccino in a little coffee-bar, while watching the workers rush in for a quick espresso we arrived at the really empty Piazza San Marco - it was definitely worth the less sleep!

After we enjoyed the city in the morning sun we ambled back to the hotel for breakfast and came back to the San Marco areal in the afternoon. This time there were way more tourists and the charm of the city was not as big as in the morning. Strange to say that because we were tourists too but I think you'll understand what i mean. So we can recommend to walk around the city early in the morning at least one time.
It's a different city than in the afternoon.

In the evening we came back to the hotel with worn out legs and a lot of awesome impressions. We ate dinner at another small restaurant and afterwards fell in our bed like stones.

That's it for the first part of our little travel!
We hope you enjoyed the pictures and maybe learned something if you plan your own trip.
Let us know your experience in the comments!

Stay tuned! :)
