Exploring Japan - Rice Fields (ancient black rice)

in #travel7 years ago

I posted the other day about exploring Shiki no Mori, an enormous park in the middle of Yokohama. Right in the middle of that park is a series of rice fields.

In the foreground of the picture below you can see some rice plants that are very tall and straight and in the background there are plants that have fallen over. The foreground plants are "ancient rice", which is also black rice. The other rice is typical Japanese short grain white rice. All of the ancient rice is super healthy, but the regular rice has fallen over in the recent rain.

After the rice is cut, they are hung to dry. This is a common sight all over Japan at harvesting time (usually Autumn).

The tops of all the rice plants are tied with...rice plants!

Here you see the difference between the black rice (the ancient type) and the white koshihikari, short grain rice (that you get in sushi).

What an interesting blog. My wife mentioned about this type of rice in the past and said it's actually really tasty. At least now I know where it comes from and how it's produced.

Great post. Thanks. :)

Thanks @ezzy! You should have seen us trying to dehull it for the picture!

Really interesting post, enjoyed seeing the process

This was a great post. Thank you for sharing. I'll be sure to keep an eye out for you future work!

It would be interesting to try the black kind. Not that I've tried sushi rice either. We have a short grained rice but it is used for porridge.

i have tried black rice the a few years back , but its super expensive, if i remember right it has a nutty flavored, but i had forgotten about it until this post reminded me.

i thought rice is in water :) like a swamp

You are right! The rice was in a muddy swamp. You can see the raised edges around the rice paddy and a little bit of muddy water in the corner of the shot of the rice field.
