Extraordinary Travels #1 - Italy

Travelling is not an ordinary part of routine for me but I was lucky enough to explore Europe for the first time earlier this year.

I met up with one of my best friends in London and we travelled together around Europe. Of course one of our stops was Italy. We landed in Naples for a night and took a day trip to explore Pompeii before landing in Sorrento for a couple of nights. The second half of our trip was spent in Positano and Amalfi.

I would travel the 20+ hours from Sydney again even if it was just for Italy and no other part of Europe - Italy was definitely the highlight of my trip.

As we landed in Naples late in the evening and left early the next morning I didn't get a chance to take any photos but we did have delicious pizza (how can you not when you are in Naples) before heading to our hotel. The following morning we took a 45 minute train ride in a very packed train mostly filled with locals and some tourists. We hopped off and walked straight to the Pompeii ruins.

It was such a hot day and after walking around all day we headed for Sorrento. We stayed at a hotel close to the wharf and had lunch at a beautiful restaurant just two doors up from the hotel. The wait staff were incredibly friendly and accommodating and the food was fresh and delicious.

Later that evening we walked down to the wharf area and watched the sunset before cooling off with a gelato of course - the photos speak for themselves.

Following Sorrento, we took a coach bus to Positano. The roads in Italy are incredible narrow and windy and I was amazed and entertained by how people managed to drive on these roads especially when coaches take up the entire width of the road. By the end of the ride I loved the sounds of honking, the thrill of getting close to the edge, and watching scooters dart in and out, bypassing those stuck in traffic jams.

I admit, Positano was my favourite amongst all of the locations we visited. We stayed close to the main square which meant we were close to the restaurants, cafes, bars and most importantly the beach.

If you are ever in Positano, dine at Chez Black just on the beach - we tried the seafood soup and sea urchin pasta and was given complimentary wine as we waited for a table.

Following Positano, our last stop was Amalfi. Much like Positano, the views and beaches were beautiful. My favourite part of Amalfi was being able to get picked up at the wharf and taken to a private beach where we spent half the day swimming, sunbathing and napping before heading back for a late lunch.
