I love the wanderlust. I don't like visiting or hiting check points like everyone else, I really want to feel the city or the place. I love to get lost and most of the time I might miss the main attraction favouring a little small shiny corner that make sense in my world. Lately I have done a lot of tiring traveling as you say for my job and I felt like I haven't even been then.

My mum was always a planner. She'd get so annoyed if things didn't go to plan. My husband taught me how to go with the flow and it's so much more fun!

Aah I knew you'd resonate with this post! :) Yeah, I hate "main attractions" traveling also. It's nice, but it's also really dull, because you don't get an actual feel of the city. Because there are very few natives at those main attractions, it's usually just a lot of tourists like you, snapping a few quick pics and then moving on to the next objective. No way to travel at all.
I love getting lost in foreign cities. Last year, I went to Rome with my best friend and it was a very main attraction-y sort of journey. But funny enough, the best part was we got lost looking for the last one and met this English woman who was also lost looking for the place and got chatting and instead went and got coffee with her. It was very random, I love that sort of thing. :)
I so get that. I mean, if you want the main toursity places, you can just see them online. It's not representative of the place at all. Maybe you get to go again and experience those cities better ;)
