TRAVELtheWORLD #2: The Kuala Lumpur Twin Towers
Petronas Twin Towers are Kuala Lumpur, Malaysia’s twin skyscrapers owned by KLCC Holdings Sdn B. They were the tallest building in the world for six (6) long years, from 1998 to 2004 beating Taiwan’s Taipei 101 record.
Arch. Cesar Pelli is the designer of this postmodern style towers as an icon for Kuala Lumpur. The company spent US $1.6 billion to complete the 88-floored building (with 5 below the ground) and a floor area of 395,000 square meter. The construction started on March 1, 1993, completed March 1 on that same year and was inaugurated on August 31 1999.
The towers are made mostly of concrete and steel and glass and its design is parallel with the Islamic art which reflects Malaysia, a Muslim country.
At the feet of the towers is Suria KLCC upmarket that sells foreign luxury goods and high-street labels. A gallery of arts, a theatre, an underwater aquarium and Science center are some of the attractions it offers .
