CARCASSONNE - About arriving at night to a French village, finding a castle and discovering that inside there is a citadel full of life!
Not only is the place extremely beautiful, but arriving without knowing what it was like gave us a unique sense of surprise.
It was night, very cold in French January- We thought about going to see from closer that Castle that was illuminated in the distance on the other side of the river. Thinking that -obviously -it was going to be closed, and that the next day we would enter buying a ticket.
The road to the castle was deserted, we only found one living being, a cat that was giant and super friendly. He followed us to the wall.
As you know I characterize myself by "following the rabbit" so I wanted to see if I could enter the first wall somewhere.
And yes! We found an entrance, behind the wall there was another wall. That we also found open.
And inside ... inside was everyone. It was not just a castle, it was a Citadel full of bars where people were drinking beer and walking the narrow streets.
It was a magical moment. Obviously we drank our beer in the sidewalk of a bar despite the cold.
The next day we returned there. We met our cat friend in the road.
The "Cité de Carcassonne" is constituted by elements of the Middle Ages. And it was declared a World Heritage Site in 1997.
Located in the south of France (we came by car from Spain) and across the Aude River from the newer part of the city. I was able to capture this lady with the red umbrella crossing the bridge.
Inside you can taste typical French delicacies. Like almond and chocolate bites. And obviously the best of France: cheese, wine and bread.
Do you know this place? Did you like it? I super recommend going there!
