Facts of the Battle of Nations	Fakten der Völkerschlacht
From 10/16/1813 - 10/19/1813 the "Völkerschlacht" (Battle of Nations) took place here in Leipzig. As allies Russia, Prussia, Austria and Sweden won against Napoleon. 600 000 soldiers were involved in this devastating battle and 100 000 were wounded and killed. A subsequent typhus epidemic killed another 10% of the inhabitants of Leipzig.	Vom 16.-19.10.1813 fand hier vor Leipzig die Völkerschlacht statt. Als Verbündete siegten hier Russland, Preußen, Österreich und Schweden gegen Napoleon. Bei dieser verheerenden Schlacht waren 600 000 Soldaten beteiligt und 100 000 wurden verwundet und getötet. Eine anschließende Typhus-Epidemie brachte weiteren 10% der Leipziger Einwohner den Tod.
Just one year later, the idea for the construction of this monument was born. However, it took until 1913, until the monument was officially inaugurated after 15 years of construction.	Bereits ein Jahr später entstand die Idee zur Errichtung dieses Denkmals. Es dauerte allerdings bis 1913, bis das Denkmal nach 15 Jahren Bauzeit offiziell eingeweiht wurde.

Inside the monument is an exhibition area and the Hall of Fame. Up to the hall of fame one arrives by elevator or also by a staircase, with which one can throw again and again interesting views into the internal construction of the monument. I can only recommend the inexpensive audio guide.	Im inneren des Denkmals befindet sich ein Ausstellungsbereich und die Ruhmeshalle. Bis zur Ruhmeshalle gelangt man per Aufzug oder auch durch ein Treppenhaus, bei dem man immer wieder interessante Blicke in die innere Konstruktion des Denkmals werfen kann. Den kostengünstigen Audioguide kann ich nur empfehlen.

Insie the Hall of Fame there are four 9.5 meter high statues. They are death guards and represent personifications of the virtues of the German people in the wars of liberation.	In der Ruhmeshalle befinden sich vier 9,5 Meter hohe Statuen. Es sind Totenwächter und stellen Personifikationen der Tugenden des deutschen Volkes in den Befreiungskriegen dar.

The Crypt / Die Krypta

A look into the crypt	Ein Blick in die Krypta
In the basement of the Hall of Fame is the crypt. It carries the Hall of Fame with 8 pillars and at the same time represents the symbolic tomb of the fallen in the Battle of Nations. The symbolic tomb is guarded by eight groups of two stone warriors. Between the warriors, the "mask of fate" is depicted.	Im Unterbau der Ruhmeshalle befindet sich die Krypta. Diese trägt mit 8 Pfeilern die Ruhmeshalle und stellt gleichzeitig das symbolische Grab der in der Völkerschlacht Gefallenen dar. Das symbolische Grab wird von acht Zweiergruppen aus steinernen Kriegern bewacht. Zwischen den Kriegern ist jeweils die "Schicksalsmaske" abgebildet.

In the dome of the Hall of Fame 324 riders are shown with approximately 1.40 m almost life-size.	In der Kuppeldecke der Ruhmeshalle sind 324 Reiter ca. 1,40 m fast lebensgroß abgebildet.

Der Weg hinauf zur Aussichtsplattform

From the Hall of Fame only very narrow stairs lead up to the gallery and ultimately to the observation deck at the top of the monument. For the ascending and descending are partly used the same stairs, which is why the stream of visitors is regulated by traffic lights. That's a good thing, because the small width would make it impossible for two people to pass each other. But you will ultimately be rewarded with a phenomenal panoramic view.

Ab der Ruhmeshalle führen dann nur noch teils sehr schmale Treppen hinauf zur Empore und letztendlich auch zur Aussichtsplattform an der Spitze des Denkmals. Teilweise erfolgt hier der Auf- und Abstieg über die gleichen Treppen, weshalb der Personenverkehr über Ampelsignale geregelt wird. Das ist auch gut so, denn aufgrund der Enge würde unmöglich zwei Personen an einander vorbei passen. Belohnt wird man letztendlich aber mit einen phänomenalen Panoramablick.

The historical presence of monarchs, dictators and polital representatives is, of course, enormous at such a significant monument.	Auch die historische Präsenz von Herrschern, Diktatoren, Politikern und Volksvertretern ist natürlich bei einem solch bedeutungsvollen Denkmal enorm.
In 1913 the inauguration was completed by Kaiser Wilhelm II - almost exactly one year before the beginning of the war	1913 Wurde die Einweihung von Kaiser Wilhelm II. vollzogen - fast genau 1 Jahr vor Kriegsbeginn
In the third "Reich" Adolf Hitler used the impressive scenery several times for his speeches.	Im dritten Reich nutzte auch Adolf Hitler die beeindruckende Kulisse mehrmals für seine Reden.
At the time of the GDR, the monument was again misused as a propaganda object, e.g. for the swearing-in of recruits and the consecration of the flag.	Zu Zeiten der DDR wurde das Denkmal wieder als Propagandaobjekt missbraucht z.B. zur Vereidigung von Rekruten und zur Fahnenweihe.
2013 Martin Schulz (as President of the European Parliament) gave a speech regarding the centenary of the monument.	2013 hielt Martin Schulz eine Rede als Präsident des europäischen Parlaments zum 100 jährigen Jubiläum des Denkmals.
