☀️Although Switzerland is a wealthy country now, that was not always the case. Around 500 years ago it was a poor citizenry and many of the young men had to resort to working abroad as mercenaries for income.
💧A group of these men found employment guarding the Apostolic Palace and the Pope while acting as the world’s smallest sovereign army for the Vatican.
🌳Today that tradition continues with 130 Swiss guards at the ready to lay down their lives in protection of another nation.
