RE: I don't know yet.

in #travel6 years ago

Hi honeydue 👋

My longest traveling stint was for 3 months in Thailand 9 years ago. I went wandering that crazy, beautiful, mystical land on my own but ended up meeting people along my way, despite being shy.

The reason I told people I was going was to learn how to scuba dive... but really that was only a few weeks of my trip taken up with the PADI course and a Liveaboard diving trip afterwards.

Mainly, it was just to wander, learn and gain a bit of confidence back after a long bout of depression. The kill or cure method and it really worked. It's super cliche, but I returned changed and for the better.

why are we so obsessed with seeming important? With seeming busy? Everyone's so desperate to sound like they're drowning in work and like they're so important.

Ha ha, yeah I've noticed that. All my adult life most of the men in my family have had that attitude and have been critical of how I go about my life. I think some people just believe it is the only way to move through life constructively. Lol, also self importance is food for egotist. I feel like artists and writers prove them wrong in their attitudes anyway, as I've never met a good writer who doesn't have a different routine from those self important types.

But what if the purpose is waiting for you there, when you arrive?

Very good point, and this is the difference between travel and adventure I think. Going out into the world simply to see what you can find is adventure... And you're sure to get more interesting stories doing it that way 🙂

Enjoyed reading your thoughts, keep us updated on where you decide to go exploring.

SOunds like it was an amazing experience and you had loads of fun. Honestly, I've always been of a mind that travel is the best medicine. For anything. A broken heart, depression, losing a job, anything.
Adventure is always a good solution.

I love your response and wow, three months...that's such a long time. It's interesting to see how differently we view this time at home and abroad. Because if you spend three months at home, it's nothing really, it's a bit of time. But if you tell someone you're going away for three months, they'll think it's ages. Weird.
Thank you for sharing your experience with me :) It sounds incredible!

Here's to many more such adventures! :)

But if you tell someone you're going away for three months, they'll think it's ages.

It feels longer because there are more unique experiences which creates a more diverse timeline and a story, but when everything is just routine, there's less things to "grab on", hence it feels much shorter in hindsight. Well that's my (another) theory anyway.

I agree. Those three months flew by, even though I stayed in various places for a week at a time rather than a couple of days like some travelers do. I much prefer the slower pace of traveling. I can't remember who it was, might have been martibis, at steemfest said he thought 3 months was a long time to stay just in Thailand. He was like, "you could have done Vietnam and Cambodia as well in that time." Ha ha, I'm too lazy for such quick dashing about 😆

I agree @celestal time passes by a lot differently. Though I don't know, I've never really been away a whole lot. I've never been away three months like you @raj808 or however long you wandered about, @celestal :P And I'm really curious what that would be like... Especially to just stay in one place, get a feel of it, like a sort of new home, you know?

Sorry, daydreaming a bit into your conversation, guys :D

It was something like 54 days that I was away. Though I never stayed put for long: longest time was in Krakow for about 10 days and then in Oradea for about the same time.

Sorry, daydreaming a bit into your conversation, guys :D

I'm always up for listening to a good daydream ;)

54 days is nothing to sneeze at :O I've been contemplating a long term trip, and I must say this conversation and my present budget are butting heads right now :))))

Yeah, I remembered thinking you'd show up around here much sooner :D Oh well, sometimes it's good to stay, sometimes it's good to go, I suppose.

I'm always up for listening to a good daydream ;)

Haha especially when it's to do with travel, right? ;)

If your open to the idea, you could try to find a hostel or some place to volunteer at. Hostel was the first thing that comes to my mind, because there you'll have a high chance to meet like-minded people, so it wouldn't be an awful job, I think.

Haha, yes :D

Absolutely!

Funnily enough, just after I read your post I stumbled upon one from lizanomadsoul all about phi phi Island in Thailand where I learned to dive. I spoke with her a little at steemfest, maybe you met her? Anyway, check out her profile for that post if you want some inspiration. Warning, it will make u wanna go Thailand though 🤣

Ha she already has :D pity Thailand is rather far away and expensive af to get to from over here, at least!
Yeah, I met her and spoke briefly to her too :D She's awesome! And funnily enough, I refreshed my feed and found her post, too. It was perfectly appropriate for my traveling mood, huh? :))

Ha ha, yeah syncronysity at its best. I was life is this the Twilight zone when that was the next post I looked at after yours and having just connected about phi phi Island.

Thailand is a bit far and expensive due sure. Maybe look at South/central America. It's just as far but not as expensive. I got a last minute flight to Cancun in Mexico a few years back for £285 return. Crazy cheap. Thompson holidays sell these last minute seats from people who've cancelled due to sickness. Worth looking at 🙂

Thanks for the tip, I had no idea ;) I'll definitely look into that.
