Mount Gabriel

Located north of the small harbor village of Schull West Cork, Mount Gabriel can be seen for miles around as is easily identified due to two radar domes on top of the mountain.

Mount Gabriel is 407m high, from the top of the mountain you can see from miles around in all directions with views of Schull harbor, Roaring Water Bay its many Islands, coast, inlets and 40 shades of green.

The Radar Domes

But what are these radar domes? and why are they there?

In the late 1970s, as part of the development of Eurocontrol (the European air traffic control system), two radar domes were built on the top of the mountain.

1982 the Irish National Liberation Army, an Irish republican paramilitary group blew up the radar domes, wrongly claiming that they were being used by NATO in violation of Irish neutrality.

A German plane also crashed into the mountain in 1942

Schull

Schull is a small harbor village located on the south west of Ireland, used often for sea recreation and boating.

Schull has a population 693 but I believe this number would change at different times of the year as Schull has a high number of holiday homes.

Because seeing is believing:
