Art Nouveau gem in Vienna
Revolutionary design and home to a club (who would've thought?)
Besides loving to sit outside the Otto Wagner Pavillon in the middle of picturesque Vienna, my hometown for 19 years straight, I especially loved the view a few days ago while sipping on my coffee.
And now fasten seatbelts: the Otto Wagner Pavillon is home to a really awesome club called Club-U. Where art nouveau meets wild partys! A café during the day, a famous party location at night.
But how did a Art Nouveau temple turned out to be a club?
The Art Nouveau pavilion was built in 1898 in the course of Stadtbahn construction. Otto Wagner planned two portal buildings of identical design.
Wagner's design was revolutionary: decorative details turned the Stadtbahn station into a famous example of Viennese art nouveau. The apple-green is the signal colour of the Stadtbahn. Gold was also added as you can see, and finest white marble.
In the 60s protests took place to stop the demolition of the pavillion because they wanted to build the subway junction. Today noone would lay hands of such a building, but back then...he station building was dismantled - and re-erected in 1977, but elevated 1.5 m above its old level on the square.
If you happen to be in Vienna, pay this building a visit. It's located in the middle of Karlsplatz and the Resselpark
