That's interesting. There's a lot of friction with FX... even when the conversion is done by the bank. Over here we have money changers who give a better rate. The only hassle is that you have to deal with physical cash most of the time.

Yeh I agree there is a lot of friction, bank try to reduce their risk, and have to pay their staff and make a profit.
The hassle/risk of cash is losing it if you leave your wallet behind somewhere or (hopefully only) a low risk of theft, but the risks of having cash is probably worth it to make your money go further and lose less money to fees.

Yeah my wife had around $800 stolen on our trip to Japan while we were on the plane. That was an expensive lesson learnt lol.
