in #travel7 years ago

Mt. Kenya, named after the small East African country is the Second Highest Peak in Africa. Amazingly, the Highest Peak in Africa, Mt Kilimanjaro is in East Africa too and one can get a clear view of Mt. Kilimanjaro from Mt. Kenya's Peak. The mountain can be accessed via road from Kenya's capital Nairobi a distance of 178 Kilometers to the Chogoria Gate. This is the most scenic route of all. With creaks, vallies, Lakes and a thick tropical forest.

The name Kenya, a corrupt version of the original name Kirinyaga, the name given to the Mountain by the Kikuyu, the dominant community that lives around the mountain, mean's God's dwelling. The Kikuyu refer to God as Mwenenyaga and hence his dwelling as Kirinyaga.

The vegetation along the Chogoria route is captivating. Camping facilities are available and one can enjoy treks as well bicycle riding along this route. The access road is motoral allyear round up to the Chogoria Banda's, a self-service lodge managed by Tharaka Nithi County Government. The charges per night are affordable, even though, you will be required to have porters who are familiar with the mountain before embarking on climbing the mountain.

Here's some photos I took while on a weekend getaway at Lake Ellis, one of the lakes on the Mountain, accessible through the scenic Chogoria route.Mt Kenya 2012.jpgMt Kenya River.jpg
