Sakhalin Island - southern part

in #travel7 years ago

Sakhalin is the largest island of Russia. In chinese it is known as Kuye (库页) and in japanese as Karafuto (樺太).

Before Second World War Sakhalin was splited: north part of island belonged to Soviet Union and south part belonged to Japan. This is the only building from Japanese times in the city Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk (Южно-Сахалинск). It's Regional Museum now.

Velikan Cape (Мыс великан) - placed in the southeastern coast of Sakhalin. Not well known even among locals. It's about one and half an hour from Yuzhno-Sakhalinsk. The way is not marked at all and roads are dirt and muddy. Recommended to go only with 4WD car.

The rock formations are stunning, especially during nice wheather. I was not lucky that day.
