Behaviour in a Yurt - Rules in Mongolia!

Hey Guys, I have been invited to sleep in my first Mongolian Yurt. I have been introduced by locals in some Yurt rules. I tried to remember all rules not to be rude.

  • If you want to enter a yurt, never knock on the door. Just ask if you can come in or just come in
  • Never step onto the door sill, you will annoy the ghosts in the yurt
  • Never stretch your feet to the altar
  • women are sitting on the right side and men are sitting on the left side in the yurt
  • Bring a present, but something useful for nomads, for example: Vodka, Rice or flour
  • the door of the fire place is on the woman side, cause women are responsible for fire in the yurt, they usually are using camel
shit or cow shit as firewood, but of course dry shit and it doesnt stink anymore, it smells more like incense
  • You can move in the yurt only clockwise
  • The door in the yurt always points to the sun. Because of this the yurt is like a sundial

Nomads without camels are not real nomads

This bulbs on the camel look a bit strange, do you agree?

Nomads are putting this stick next to the nose of a camel to be able to control it

Nomads are getting electricity from the sun, I like!

If you are thirsty, feel free to bring your water from water fountain. Tipp: heat it up, you never know if your stomach can handle bacteria in the water. Western people are used to drink different water. Safety first!

People are using dried shit as firewood

I was washing my clothes by hand in the yurt

Sometimes you can see yurts for tourists. I would always prefer a real one with locals. You can learn more in a real yurt

I always wanted to setup on of these and spend some time. Was it cold at night? How's the ventilation?

cool, :) it is a super cool experience , yes it is cold at night. On the side of the Yurt you can attach the fleece carpet on the wall and in the middle of the roof is a whole, ventilation is working very good :)
