Star Wars location

in #travel7 years ago

Recently I spent some time around the Dingle Peninsula, Co. Kerry in Ireland. The latest Star Wars episode had some scenes filmed in the area at the end of 2016. The entire film crew descended onto a quiet and remote area of Ireland to film scenes for the Star Wars film The Last Jedi. They used locations on Skellig Michael, which was at the end of the previous movie and also an area on the mainland called Ceann Sibeal which is called Sybil Head in english.

The headland is the rise in the distance on the left. Most of this area has very few trees and the ones that are there are in sheltered areas.

In the area they built an artificial Beehive hut town which features in the film, which I am yet to see. Because of all the heavy equipment and filming they built a steel road up the hill to deal with the muddy farmland. Many of the roads in the area are very narrow, barely wide enough for two small cars to pass while scraping the vegetation on the side and in some places only one car can fit. This of course doesn't stop large tourist buses working their way around the area.

This is an areal shot of the constructed village made from plastic which looks fairly realistic.

Reportedly the production company needed to make sure that there was no modern fishing vessels in the area during filming. This has been a fishing area for a long time. So they paid the fisherman to not fish while they filmed, of course all the fisherman simply continued fishing in another area and pocketed the money.

This is the real stone age beehive huts that are reportedly up to 5000 years old.

It is a very different area around there, quite different to other parts of Ireland and has some spectacular scenery, when you can see it. There are many walks around there including the christian pilgrimage to Mount Brandon.
