The city of Novaya Ladoga. Neighborhoods of St. Petersburg.

in #travel7 years ago

According to archaeological data, next to the place where the town of Novaya Ladoga is located today, the village of Staraya Ladoga was the oldest settlement of Ancient Rus (the possible capital of the state of Rurik). The city itself originated on the site of the Nikolo-Medved monastery, built in the 14th century. During the Northern War (the war between Russia and Sweden) in 1702, by the order of Peter the Great, the territory of the Nikolo-Medvedsky Monastery was surrounded by an earthen rampart and a moat, and a shipyard was built at the mouth of the Volkhov River at the confluence of Lake Ladoga. For the construction of ships Peter the First ordered the ships from the neighboring shipyards of the rivers Svir and Syas to be brought here as samples.

In 1704, by the decree of Peter the Great, the city of Novaya Ladoga was founded, after which the ancient settlement was named Staraya Ladoga nearby. In Novy Ladoga, Peter ordered to move almost all the inhabitants of Staraya Ladoga, and several regiments of soldiers were brought here to create the guard.
In 1719 the construction of the Ladoga Canal (a 117-kilometer waterway along the shores of the Ladoga Lake, connecting the Neva and Volkhov rivers) was started.

Map of the channel of the Emperor Peter the Great (1741-1742), today it is called the Old Ladoga Canal.

The construction of the canal was delayed and so in 1723 Peter the Great personally took over the leadership of the construction work. And in the summer of 1725, civilian workers (7,000 men) and soldiers of the regular army (18,000 men) were involved in the construction.

From the middle of the 18th century, Novaya Ladoga was the center of the Novoladozhsky district of the St. Petersburg province. In 1763-1769 the future Generalissimo AV Suvorov commanded the Suzdal Infantry Regiment in Novaya Ladoga.
In 1861-1866, along the old Petrovsky Canal, a new, deeper canal - Novoladozhsky - was dug along the shore of the Ladoga Lake.
