Meeting the white shark.
I had a big dream, meeting the white shark in his natural habitat.
The white shark, the biggest predetory fish in the world.
Not a meeting as a scubadiver, because these animals are too unpredictable in their behavior.
I do not want to end up in the mouth of that animal.
Last year, during our trip to Australia, I got the opportunity to meet this amazing fish.
SHARK CAGE DIVING.
Cagediving with the great white. Viewing the sharks in a safe cage under water, without being eaten.
We booked a trip in Port Lincoln, South Australia.
The boat left early, 6.oo am for our trip to the neptunes island.
We had a nice breakfast and the sea was quiet calm in the beginning. We had some dolphins swimming next to the boat, so lovely.
What a nice start of the trip.
After 3 hours of sailing, we finally arrived at the islands. The sea was not so quiet anymore, but we were still ok. I took medication against seasickness as a precaution.
The skipper brought us close to the islands, to show us the sealions. We could see them very well. There were hundreds of them. In the sea and lying on the rocks. And sealions are one of the favorite meals of the sharks. So fingers crossed.
While we took many pictures, the crew selected the location for diving. When we arrived, the anchor was dropped.
While we recieved instructions, the crew tried to attract the shark.
First they used music. They threw a loudspeaker in the water. It seems that the sharks react to heavy metal music. ACDC is their favorite pop group.
Nothing happened, no sharks.
The crew also used bait and berley to attract the sharks.
Suddenly we saw a white shark from the boat. A really big one, about 4 meters long.
Once the shark arrived, the case was dropped down at the back of the boat. The cage is about 3 meters in height completely immersed in the water, except a few inches for the opening and turnover of people.
The cage offers spaces for 6 people. Diving time is 35-45 minutes per group. There are regulators for breathing, so you do not have to hold your breath. You don't need a diver certification.
In the meantime, I had already become quite seasick through the high waves, despite the medication. But that did not stop me from going into the cage.
The water was very cold. While we were waiting in the cage, suddenly a white shark came to the cage.
Wow. It was amazing being so close to this big powerful fish. The big mouth, teeth and aggressive eyes. Face to face. Quite frightening, but I felt really comfortable in the cage.. What a great experience.
We stayed the whole day at the island. We were able to enter the cage several times. There was plenty of time for everyone.
Finally we saw 3 white sharks that day.
Due the seasickness, I do not feel for eating lunch, but it looked delicious.
There was also a small submarine under the boat with a great view. So you did not even have to get wet to see the sharks. Also a great experience.
We had a great day, with the sharks.
A DREAM HAS COME TRUE.
Wow, jealous!!! Nr 2 on my underwater water bucket list after Orca's :-)
Whalesharks are also on my bucketlist.
Ah, those I have seen snorkling at the Philippines. I wrote a blog post about it a few weeks ago.
Must have been a great moment! Just followed you for more posts like this buddy! Feel free to check my latest post about the tresher sharks in the philippines.
Cheers
Nice post. Follow you now
thx buddy! Looking forward to your posts too!
Did you have diving experience before this?
I am a scubadiver for all ready 14 years. It is a nice way to relax.
Amazing images! Who did you do the dive with, Rodney Fox or Calypso? Im planning on doing this trip in a month or two, hoping to get some large females which hang around in winter.
We did the calypso trip. It was expensive but wel organized. I am sure you will enjoy it.
We saw the rodney fox overthere. It looks very nice. More spectaculair than calypso. They do have liveaboard so they make many dives a day.
Nice! Yep I know a fair few people who use Rodney Fox because of the liveaboard
