Visit Jordan #2 – And become a Martian

Let me show you what Wadi Rum national park has to offer.

It is one of the TOP touristic attractions in Jordan. Nevertheless, you won’t be bothered by the other tourists, nor queues or traffic!

With my friends we rented a car and started in Amman, the capital. The whole way through the Kings Highway takes a long 4 hours. Most of the time you feel like on another planet! Not only because of the views. I guarantee you the once-in-a-life-time driving experience! Three trucks overtaking each other on a two-lane road, U-turns in the middle of the highway, watermelons (lost by the speeding truck driver) rolling over and trying to kill you, highly recommended! Just don’t forget to fasten your seat belts!

Afraid that your Tesla won’t handle it? No worries, you can charge it at every gas station!

At the end of the way there is a big Tourist Centre after which all you can see is sand and stones. That is the place where the Bedouins are picking up their guests and leading them to the camping place. You need to be very careful while driving through the desert – it is really easy to get lost!

And after arrival?

Mars right from Hollywood, real Astronaut experience without the fear of dying. What you can do there? Enjoy! Views, fresh air, sand in your eyes, sand in your hairs, sand in your pants... you're gonna love it! However it sounds, the pure nature not distracted by anything is hypnotizing. You can sit on a rock or in the soft sand and just look around until the sun sets.

This is the real picture. The black block in the middle is our camp site, next to the alpaca are our neighbours. The small person in front is me, looking for the perfect spot to watch the sunset

What the Bedouins do when the sun has set?

Cooking! They dig a hole, set it on fire and wait until the ground gets hot enough. After some time, raw chicken and veggies were buried there (in a pot, no worries!). An hour of waiting later and you are ready to eat! Food prepared this way is really juicy and full of flavours! After the dinner we were sitting around the fire place, smoking shisha and gazing at the stars. Since there is no big city within hundreds of kilometres, the sky is absolutely amazing! We were maybe 12 people, including our hosts. The atmosphere was really friendly and we got along very good. We were sharing our stories, telling jokes and simply enjoying the freedom until late in the night.

Entertainment

The day after we went for a ride. Guess where? Yes, to the desert! Does it sound ridiculous? Paying 15$ to go from the middle of the desert to go further into the desert just to see more sand? Yes! But we were promised to see real sand dunes, crazy rock formations aaaaaand... do sandboarding! As a ski lover I was so much looking forward to try it!

The views were indeed, really adorable. Just take a look:

And eventually, after the whole day of waiting... our Bedouin took out a board! Yes, yes, yes, just a few seconds and I’m gonna be sliding down on that soft warm sand!

It’s like a winter but so much better

I was thinking. But I forgot about one, small, tiny detail... There is no lift up! You know what that means? For every single ride down (which is pretty slow due to the huge friction), you have to take the board under your arm and walk up. And walking up in the sand is not nice, oh no no!

Yes, alpacas can snowboard up the hill!

To sum up: Jordan - highly reccomended. Sandboarding - not necessarily!
