Yes, that is unusual. My guess is, since the bulk of the village is located behind the mountain spur, the spire has been built so tall to prevent the sound of the bells from being trapped in the valley. Look at the aerial footage in the video; the sound needs to clear the buildings to have a chance to bounce off the opposite mountains.
