No we didn’t see them more closely than you see in the photos. The king penguins are quite tall - around 1m and the others around 70cm which I think is medium sized for a penguin. Cool that you saw them in Australia! Whereabouts exactly?

    Philipp Island and St.Kilda Melbourne. In this second location I saw them closer. And I am sure they are less than 70cm. By the way your post is awesome!
