Native plants from Australia

There are no less than 24,000 Australian native plant species, making our flora one of the country's greatest assets. Here are some of the most common species and their habitat in the wild.

The acacia (mimosa)

Australia has more than 1,200 species of acacia, better known as mimosas. The Golden Mimosa is Australia's iconic flower and can be found around Canberra, South New South Wales, the Adelaide Hills and Victoria. The flowering season runs from spring to summer and the mimosa day is celebrated every year on September 1st.
The haemodoraceae

The family of haemodoraceae has more than 100 species, like the emblematic anigozanthos, nicknamed "kangaroo paw". Eleven species of anigozanthos are endemic to southwestern Western Australia and can be found along creeks, forests and marshes. Anigozanthos flower between August and October and are colored yellow and green or red, pink, orange and brown.

Wildflowers transform arid areas of the Australian savannah into colorful carpets during the blooming season. From June to September, over 12,000 species of wildflowers

The eremophila

Often referred to as the "emu bush", the eremophilas category includes more than 200 endemic species in Australia. These plants are generally seen in arid and semi-arid regions, particularly in Western Australia. Eremophilia is known for its colorful bushes and gives fleshy fruits often eaten by animals and birds.
Proteaceae

The proteaceae family, including banksias, grevilleas and telopeas, are among the most popular native plants in Australia. The main characteristic of the proteaceae family is that the head of the flower consists of innumerable small flowers. Telopeas are common in national parks along the coast of New South Wales.
Melaleucas

Called tea tree, melaleuca is a genus of 170 species of the myrtle family, the majority being endemic to Australia. They are usually found along streams or marshes and grow on different types of soils. The melaleuca is known for its essential oils marketed under the name of tea tree.
Eucalyptus

With 2,800 species of eucalyptus (gum), these are the trees most commonly associated with Australia.

Australian wildlife

In Australia we have many endemic species. Some are well known, such as koalas and kangaroos, while others may seem strange to visitors.
You can meet many animals in our zoos and animal parks and, if you are lucky, you can see them in their natural habitat.
Many animals are unique to Australia. We are one of the few continents to gather the three groups of mammals: monotremes, marsupials and placentaries, and we shelter more than 800 species of birds including the iconic emu. We have two species of crocodiles, 4,000 fish species and 50 types of marine mammals. Many visitors come to Australia to discover our animals.
