The Terrible Travellers: St Petersburg (Day 3-Part 2)
With today marked out for travelling, and this morning turning into a downpour, there will not be much to report back with. This means there is an opportunity to complete yesterday's post.
The delightful picture below shows a two headed calf. This is from our visit to the ethnological museum here in the burg.
There was an abundance of gruesome exhibitions, mostly of babies which was quite unsettling. We didn't really feel comfortable taking photos of this so one was taken to show an example and this was it.
The exhibition was interesting, but at some points quite hard to handle.
There were some examples of the medical tools of the time, the thought of these being used is not pleasant.
After this, we needed something lighter and less emotive. We caught a bus to Peterhof Palace Gardens and walked around.
There were some beautiful fountains with the backdrop of the palace itself.
After the this little jaunt through the gardens, we really needed to give our feet a rest and get horizontal.
For our evening entertainment, we were going to take part in a rooftop tour. This has been our favourite part of St Petersburg by far, the photos can be seen in part 1, but we will post our favourite again.
We were on a high after this experience and wanted to celebrate with food and drink. We wandered into a place we had seen earlier in the day. This turned out to be some kind of Russian high society restaurant. Way, way out of our comfort zone. We checked the prices and it turned out to be not as bad as we first thought. So we sat down, we got talking to the waiter about some traditional Russian food, beer and vodka. At first he seemed a bit unfriendly, maybe marking us down as some tourists who had walked into the wrong place and would just leave. We were obviously, but as we order the recommended vodka and large beer, he replied 'I like your style'. After this he seemed to warm to us and we even had a laugh with him. All in all, the meal was great but the drinks were amazing.
So this was our trip to St Petersburg complete, next we are on to Moscow by night train.
This looks super yummy! @cameron-walker
It was! The food in Russia is so much better than I had imagined!
Is that pinecones on your plate?
