Travel with me to Thailand: part 1 - Phi phi islands - speed boat, maya bay, all you can eat and more!

in #travel7 years ago

Hello dear steemians, I'm fresh out of Thailand and - not to sound like everyone you know when they go on holidays - it was "Ah-May-ZiinG!" So much, that I want to tell you all about this very far away (but exotic) Asian country. However, to make sure I'm not writing a book here, I've decided to do it in parts. Are you ready? Grab a cocktail and let's go!

The Phi Phi islands are arguably the most famous place in Thailand, some people might not even know that the countries capital is Bangkok but they know Phi Phi. Unfortunately, it also makes the region very crowded with tourists, which can be inconvenient sometimes. The actual main island of Phi phi is very small. They have a small village with a big restaurant and some shops and hotels. The scenery there is gorgeous but there is not that much to do so if you just wanna see what it is like, I'd say just stay for a day or so.

Because I'm a foodie, I could not overlook the restaurant part! I went to phi phi with a speed boat trip from Phuket with lunch included so I don't know if it is all you can eat for everyone. The food was very nice, they had a vegetarian buffet and a normal buffet, with pastas, curries, fruits and etc. I had like 3 plates, a very unwise decision when you are on vacation taking pics in bikini, but what can I do when the food is nice :) Then you had lots of tables, like hundreds near each other so they probably feed everyone on the tour boats passing by the island!

But like I said, I went there on a boat trip. If any of you know speed boats, they are very fast (duh) but because of that, when they hit waves, they also jump a lot. I mean, A LOT. To imagine, try thinking you are a pop-corn popping in a pan. Or like you are on a holler coaster. Or that you are a pop-corn in a pan that someone is holding during a holler coaster ride... You get the picture, right? So by the time I got to phi phi, I was feeling sick and with back pain, but trying to enjoy the day. Not happy with the situation, I decided to sit at the very front of the boat for the ride until Maya bay...

After thinking I'd fly off the boat, having eaten half of my hair and screaming like I had seen a ghost, I finally arrived at Maya bay. The one from DiCaprio's ''the beach'' movie, the one that is probably the screensaver of a lot of laptops around of the world, the one all the tourists go to Phi Phi to see...

**I know the photo is of bad quality but I had some plastic thing on my phone because of the water so I will get one from google for better effect:

One of the most beautiful places in Thailand (or so they said). Truth is, I was very dissapointed with Maya bay. I expected paradise like in the picture above but what I got was: a bay with dozens of boats parking and taking off, thousands of tourists so it was impossible to take a picture alone and dirty water. That is what upset me the most, the water was very dirty... not with sea weeds and those things you'd expect... there was plastic and other stuff as well. I honestly did not want to go swim in it... it was not appealing :/

That being said, although Maya bay was disappointing to me, it is still worth visiting if you have a lot of free time whilst in Thailand because it is one of those iconic places. You better see for yourself, you might surprise yourself. Nevertheless, Maya bay is not really in phi phi, so if you are spending the day there, check the ferry schedule to see if you can make it to both.

PS: If you decide to do one of these boat trips, make sure you sleep a lot the day before, otherwise you might end up just like my boyfriend...
