Iceland - The Glaciers (last part and travel tips to save cost)

in #travel7 years ago (edited)

Good morning from Greece today i will bombardier you with many photos from our last day to South East coast of Iceland, we visited glaciers, Vik area with the beautiful black beaches and of course Jökulsárlón glacier lagoon, a unique beauty place where you can easily spend a whole day. Unfortunately we did this journey with a tour group and although i have to say their organization was fine and all quite polite, i have to admit that we didn't538.jpg enjoy it as we wanted cause we spend less time than this to be devoted in such landscapes.

Lets begin our journey, so on your way to the glaciers you can see really amazing landscapes of different colors, deep blue (rivers), tundra yellowish colors, white from the mountains full of snow this period of time etc. So THAT IS WHY i recommend you visit Iceland on May, in winter you gonna lose all this colors due to snow (but gain aurora light sight which are less visible on May or frozen caves).

And here we are in front of the glacier edge, WOW comes from your soul when you stare these mountains of ice in front of you

How powerful nature can be, a river of ice coming down from the mountains

After a short stop for rest we head towards Glacier lagoon. Jökulsárlón is a large glacial lake in southeast Iceland, on the edge of Vatnajökull National Park. Situated at the head of the Breiðamerkurjökull glacier, it developed into a lake after the glacier started receding from the edge of the Atlantic Ocean. The lake has grown since then at varying rates because of melting of the glaciers. It is now 1.5 kilometres (0.93 mi) away from the ocean's edge and covers an area of about 18 km2 (6.9 sq mi). It recently became the deepest lake in Iceland, at over 248 metres (814 ft), as glacial retreat extended its boundaries (source:wikipedia).

Words cant describe my feeling when i saw these amazing landscapes, weather was quite windy but not that cold as you may expect when reaching a glacier, it should be around 3-4 C. I let you enjoy photos, words have no importance anymore

A bit disappointed to leave this place but we had to go (f..... to take a tour hope next time we drive down there, it is not that much about 400 km from the capital).

On our way back to Reykjavik, we stopped at Vik for lunch and enjoyed its unique black beaches as well as many waterfalls with best being this of Skogafoss

And this is the end of this long travel story, hope you enjoyed it and if i managed to convince you to travel to Iceland then i will be very happy, set any question you may have and remember some tips if you want to save money

  1. Dont travel during summer all are much more expensive
  2. Book a car through airlines sites you will save money
  3. Hostels in Iceland are very good
  4. Prefer May if you want to admire multi color nature, prefer winter if you want to see Aurora lights and ice caves
  5. There are several tours there but many claim lot of money, i would suggest you travel with your friends as there is no traffic and roads are simply perfect, take a tour only if you want sth more dangerous like walk on a glacier, go to a volcano, dive etc

I work in the tourism industry and just had a couple of clients come back from Iceland last week. They said they can't describe in words the beauty of this country. They also booked tours there and said that they would have prefered to rent a car rather then depend on a group scheddule. One thing they enjoyed was the free Reykjavick city tours, they said that you could really feel the passion in the way those guides did their job. Your photos are lovely, I will also surely visit Iceland soon :)

yes Iceland is among the best in Europe (with Greece of course haha) and as i said tours are good but with very strict schedules so you cant enjoy places you visit, for Reykjiavik i dont know but ok i would say there is no need too as landmarks are few, it is not Paris Rome Athens etc just a simple nice city to relax

Very interesting, it looks like your journey is fun. @bllackwidow

yes indeed among my best trips

thank you Orlena for your kind words
