#23 : Meteora, Greece

in #travel7 years ago

A mass of sandstone and conglomerate rocks in central Greece on the northwestern tip of the Thessal plains near the city of Kalambaka. The rocks reach a height of 540 m above sea level. On the top of the rocks there is a group of 24 Orthodox monasteries. Initially, all the materials needed for the construction and life of the monks were drawn on the ropes, also visitors could get to the monasteries only in such a way. Currently, some of the monasteries are open to visitors and for their convenience, stairs and bridges have been built. Legend has it that Saint Athanasius, the founder of Megalo Meteoro, the oldest monastery, rose to the top on the eagle's wings. He founded the first monastery in 1336. Because the Byzantine and Serbian wars continued at that time, these monasteries were a good, inaccessible refuge. He hid here, among others Jan Paleolog - successor to the Serbian throne. The monasteries lived during the reign of the Ottoman Sultan Suleiman the Magnificent (1520-1566).Meteory Grecja.jpg
