8 Reasons Why Shangri-La in Oman Is A Paradise On Earth
There are moments when you feel the urge to pack up your bag and escape the busy city life. A perfect vacation where you can relax at the beach, soaking up the gorgeous sunlight, hearing the endless crashing waves. Many of us would love to go on a holiday like that, but cramping yourself into the aluminum cabin, flying for long hours to the famous beach vacation destinations in Asia like Koh Phi Phi or Bali definitely put you off a little.
If you're seeking a relaxing beach holiday yet don't want to end up in one of the over-touristy beach destinations, like Mallorca or Ibiza, then THIS is the perfect beach holiday guide you need for your next trip.
On my recent visit to the Middle East, I came across this beautiful country of Oman that is not only known for its stunning landscapes but also for their indigenous culture. I was overwhelmed by the local's hospitality. Oman leaves a strong impression for me because of the amazing hotel I've stayed in and I am so eager to share with you my experience.
If you didn't know already, Oman is listed to be the safest country to travel to in the Middle East and possibly the most charming country to visit for its natural terrain and the spectacular scenery. Oman is one of the key destinations to travel to whether you're traveling for work or for relaxation. Only one hour's flight away from the Emirates hub of Dubai, you can now fly with ease.
Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort is an ideal vacation spot where I am more than sure that every traveler would fit in. Whether you're traveling in a group or as a couple, you'll find this resort extra delightful for its exceptional hospitality that makes you feel at home even though you are miles and miles away. With less than an hour drive from Muscat airport to the resort, they'll surprise you even before you arrived at the lobby of the hotel. Why is that so?
In order to enter the hotel one drives through a maze-like pathway that is actually a specially drilled tunnel leading you directly to the hotel. This is the only resort I have been to that has such an exotic and unique entrance.
Here are my reasons to visit:
Elegant interior design
If you ever wonder what the theme of a hotel is, just look at the hotel lobby. Whether it's a classic, quirky or simplistic style, the lobby always gives you a clear image of what to expect from the hotel.
As for Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah, it possesses a simple yet elegant interior that compliments the mountainous retreat facing the Gulf of Oman. The luxurious golden cream painted walls and stylish Arabic interior details, are typical of the sumptuous Middle East I have come to love
Unexpected Facilities
One of the best parts of being on holiday is doing the things you never get to do at home. For instance, spending your day lazing on a couch, doing nothing is everyone's fantasy dream. Well, if being lazy on your couch is your dream, then this resort has taken things to a brand new level. Never have you ever thought or imagine that a 'lazy river' can be built within a resort.
A lazy river is a water ride which replicates the flowing movements of a river with a slow current. Riders can just hop on with a float and enjoy the surrounding view on the water without the need or effort to swim.
Amazing landscapes
This resort was built next to the coast with the beautiful pinkish-brown mountains as a backdrop. The hotel is surrounded by cliffs with a secluded beach that stretches over 500 meters long. Each room boasts a different view from the next.
You need not leave Al-Husn, as the six-star luxury has it all exclusive to Shangri-La, a unique private beach by the cliff bay, an infinity pool facing the calm sea with an unbroken sea breeze, and private access to a viewpoint for the amazing sunrise and sunset over the rocky mountains.
Camel Riding Experience
Isn't it crazy that the resort even has their very own camels within the compound? I was so astounded to witness their extra effort to make their guests stay as luxurious as possible. It might not be your cup of tea if you're anti-animal ridings, but it's a must try if you're ever in the Middle East, especially a desert country like Oman.
Sadly, the last time I wasn't able to ride a camel when I attended a desert safari in Abu Dhabi as I was over-thrown by the bumpy and crazy rides. Thanks to this service provided in the hotel, I could finally feel and experience a camel ride along the beach. Although it wasn't a long ride, it's good enough to have a different view at a different angle.
A Mini Turtle Sanctuary
There are thousands of endangered green turtles migratring to the Omani's shores annually, making Oman a perfect spot for turtle watching during the night as they migrate to the shore to hatch.
In this resort, there is a mini turtle sanctuary that is set up, specially for turtles to hatch and release back into the sea when they are grown enough to swim through the ocean. If hotel guests would like to learn more about the Turtle Care Program, they can head down to the Eco-centre set up within the hotel.
Extensive Watersports Activities
Never have I been to any resort or hotel that offer such an extensive choice of watersports. On our last visit, there was a myriad of watersports being offered, ranging from sailing, stand up paddle boarding, kayaking, etc with a professional coach and trainer.
I still couldn't forget the last time we went kayaking in the rough sea with the strong waves that almost swallowed us. It was scary and thrilling all at once but we always felt safe because they emphasized the safety measures with life-guards scouting at the sea with the jet ski.
Outstanding Dining Experience
This property contains eight restaurants from local Arabic cuisines to Western American cuisine to modern fine-dining experience. You name it, you'll get it. In addition, there are also different lounges on offer, such as a Piano Jazz lounge, contemporary luxury musical lounge by the rooftop terrace, pool bars and a lobby lounge.
Conclusion
To conclude, this is definitely a resort that you should include in your bucket list. Even if it's just a short stay, you'll be thrilled to find what this resort can offer.

Beautiful hotel apparently! The beach is very beautiful and I imagine that there should not be many people on the beach if it is reserved for the hotel. It's pretty cool.
I have never been to a Shangri La hotel, but my wife has been to Asia several times for her job. She seems to appreciate the chain;)
Magnificent! The beach makes me dream!
I keep the address warm ;-)
Yes, the beach and the hotel its self is very secluded. Since Oman is not yet been the top tourist spot, but it's very nice that they are being extremely considerate and I definitely felt comfortable to be there. I am glad your wife enjoy it :) Hopefully, you'll make it there one day :)
You just read my mind. Especially when I live in NY city. And yes, the only thing bothering me is the long flight especially when my wife is terrified of flying. Anyway, we do love short trips and leave the city as much as we possibly can. The place in Oman you are describing is surprisingly very close to famous Dubai. You can as well experience two vacations in one season. At least that’s what I would do, if I decided to spend my vacation there. Shangri-La Barr Al Jissah Resort Looks really like a paradise. The view is a million dollar view as they say in Manhattan city. Interior seems very nice, new and clean. We actualy have “a lazy river” close by. I was there few times in the past and as lazy as it sounds, it’s actualy pretty much fun. I also love the mountains near by. I would definitely climb it, if it’s allowed. Watching mini turtles to hatch and then being released to the ocean would be really emotional especially for my wife. She really loves animals and she is definitely not shy to show her emotions 😆. Of course, watersports is a must as well as a great food. That would be one of the most important items I would be looking for while searching for vacation. I’m glad you enjoyed your vacation to the fullest @explorernations!
You always have the best words, I am so glad to see you here, supporting us :) I couldn't complain at all being at this beautiful resort with the outstanding service provided. What impresses me the most is definitely the landscapes, can you imagine this entire property was built right next to the mountains and a beautiful beach right next to it? It's beyond my expectation to be at this paradise.
Really a Awesome view here. I like it so much. Thanks for sharing your genius information @adsactly sir. I have so much benefited from your post. Stay blessed and be happy always. Keep it up. God bless you.
Follow done :-)
Ok, the hotel is a nice try, but does not really remind me of a typical Shangri La unfortunately. The typical Shangri La coziness is missing. Very cold hotel. For me in Colombo are only 2 hotels to stay at, the Cinnamon Grand and the Mount Lavinia Hotel, both top notch.
I guess it depends on different perspective. Undeniably that this is a big hotel chain, but the vibe at each and every hotel under the same name doesn't mean that they behave the same way. All I can say that I enjoyed staying here and it's definitely one of the best hotels I've ever stayed. Omani's hospitality just took it to the next level.
Wow, my jaw dropped!! What beautiful hotel. The decor is sumptuous, beautiful and the food is amazing. The dinner looked rather delicious. What was that? That’s Sri Lanka at for you at its best. I loved it. Thank you for the full review. Very informative. When I go to Sri Lanka I shall stay at Shangri-La Hotel unless you show another hotel even more impressive. Cheers.
Thanks for the compliment. But, I guess you mean Oman. Unless you mean you're heading to one of the hotel chain in Sri Lanka :)
What a place. I want the beach view while drinking some tea and the best part is Amazing landscape. One more thing is I never expect for a camel on that place.
Totally, I would have never expected that if I haven't seen it in person myself :)
The hotel and it's grounds look great! I'm quite surprised you've not mentioned prices... It must be quite expensive there, so I don't think it's for everyone. Thailand and Indonesia might be far they're much cheaper...
By reading your blog and seeing the beautiful pictures I think We should travel once in lifetime Shangri-la in Oman
Yes you are right
Woooow... This is so paradise. This is envious.... How I wish I could someday visit this place. Here in Philippines, there are a lot of Shangri la hotels and resorts but this one is very outstanding of all. Never seen Shangri la this great.
@adsactly, you bring people to different parts of the worl through literature. Very talented writers, they really know how to use words to best describe the place and it seemed like we experience the place ourselves. You put dreams to our hearts. And this one, is another dream to come true. How I wish I could stay here for a vacation at Oman, Shangri la.
Wow, your words totally made me blushed. I am more than happy that you enjoy reading this article and I definitely wish you the best of all and you dream do come true :)
