What Can You Learn From These Terrible Travel Experiences?
The words ‘bad travel experience’ are enough to send fear into all our hearts. We head off to get away from worry. The last thing we want is to consider the stressful things we could face when we jet off, as well. Is there no rest for the wicked?
But, as much as you don’t want to hear it, ignoring potential disasters altogether isn’t realistic. If you go away often, the law of averages dictates you’ll have at least some bad experiences. What’s more, many of these will be avoidable mistakes you could have saved yourself from if only you had educated yourself.
If you've been unlucky enough to fall foul, it’s crucial you don’t let the experience stop you from doing this thing you love. Instead, use this as a learning experience. To prove how you can do that, let’s look at the lessons in these three common travel setbacks.
Dude, where are my bags?
It’s painful to think about. But, you need a plan in place for the moment when your bags don’t appear on the baggage carousel. If you aren’t careful, this disaster can derail your whole trip. There could be hours at the airport, lost valuables, and a load of grief. But, what can you learn from it?
For one, take note that it’s never worth leaving valuables in your case. Keep it for things like clothes and toiletries. Take everything else in hand luggage. That way, you won’t have to worry. It’s also worth noting that insurance policies like those found at travelinsure.com are worth your while. With these in place, compensation would allow you to enjoy your trip, even without your luggage. Protection is key, kids.
A hotel five hours out of town
Nothing’s worse than finding out your hotel is in the middle of nowhere. Perhaps it looked closer on the map. Perhaps you didn’t look. Either way, facing a half hour trek each to the closest shop will soon be getting annoying. So, what’s the lesson? Obviously, you should look harder before booking.
Most hotels state miles out of town. Even if it’s in the small print, it’ll be there. Make sure you look for it. This could also teach you that working with agents like those at sbtravel.com isn’t such a bad idea. These individuals know which hotels are best. Working with them can ensure you never end up too far out of town again.
Lost paperwork
No matter where you’re going, you’ll need paperwork. This is relevant for flight passes, hotel bookings, and even excursions. Lose this, and you could soon lose money. If this has happened before, you may want to invest in folders like those found at containerstore.com which can keep everything safe.
It’s also worth noting that most companies send proof of purchase by email. So, before you head off, set up a travel email folder which you can turn to if the worst happens. At least then you won’t have to miss out because of silly mistakes!

My opinion is that FOLLOWERS must be earned not bought
When travelling, I put atleast a few clothes in the handcarry. Sometimes your baggage wont show up and will tell you that they are very sorry and they are just going to send your baggages tomorrow. So you need atleast 1 day of clothes to reach bec. this things happen and it maybe to you, next time.
I liked it .. a good story
Great post from you
Thanks for sharing..
Good advices there for avoidable travel mistakes. I got another avoidable travel mistake you can add to the list. That is to not put unprotected alcohol bottles in the travel luggage. I made a post about it now and its very funny. You can read all about it here:
https://steemit.com/travel/@olsm/what-happens-when-you-put-unprotected-alcohol-in-your-travel-luggage
Happens not only with alcohol, but with disinfection liquids too. Such a great feeling to open your backpack and feel like someone has poured vodka in your face.
Lol, now that is funny :0
I love travelling and it is very amazing to gather a lot of experience
I went to Costa Rica last year. I signed up for a work exchange with a surf school hiking that I would be spending my time on the beach and in the surf ... when I got there I discovered that the camp was 30 minutes from the beach! Going with the flow is wonderful, but a little bit of planning never hurt anyone.
The roads are all over the place here. Even on the map I still mess up how long it takes to get anywhere.
I stayed in Puerto Viejo...I was minutes away from the beach by foot :)
Hey, @adonisabril your post is amazing and so helpful.thanks for share this post.
The biggest thing Ive learned is LOOK AFTER YOUR PASSPORT! Earlier this year I wasn't allowed on my flight out of New Olreans because my passport was damaged for rain and general wear and tear. I had to fly to Huston instead, where the closest Australian embassy is. I was stuck in Huston for nearly a week while I waited for my new passport. The whole ordeal cost me over $1000 for a new passport, flights and food and accomidation in Huston.
ouch, that is never fun. :) I have been very lucky with my travels so far (knock on wood!)
I lost my passport in the mountains of Ecuador :)
I'm in Ecuador right now! Haha but on the coast
Everything you have shared its awesome and these things are most crucial except this i dont think that other things have to do during travel you have explained fantastically you given us guide completely its outstanding job you have done it bag ..hand bag ...hotel ...paperwork whole thing has come in it if we care about these things or if we will follow your experience i think we will get more successful travel trip and can escape from any trouble mindblowing post keep it up
@varunpinto This reminded me of our trip to Steemfest 2!
Our bags were broken open by someone during transit and all the cash stolen. Also, we ended up booking a Hotel in Madrid which showed pretty close to city center in Maps but ended up being in the middle of nowhere. We couldn't even get Taxis there lmao! :P
Lesson learned: Always book a Hotel close to the airport.
