The mouse was first invented by Douglas Engelbart in 1964 with an initial shape consisting of a wooden shell, circuit board and two metal wheels in contact with a flat surface. The wheels here are useful for detecting left-right and up-and-down movements. However, this initial form was deemed inefficient because besides being heavy, it was also very large in size. Then in 1972, this tool was made better by Bill English by replacing the motion detection wheel with a small round ball and this invention was called the ball mouse. In the ball mouse concept, the ball will come into contact with sensitive sensors. This sensor will read the movement of the ball which sends electrical pulses when making contact. This electric signal will provide a signal with the speed and direction of movement of the mouse. This invention was used by Bill English for Xerox Parc (Palo Alto Research Center). The results of this study are the foundation for the development of modern computers. The Xerox Alto computer system eventually became the first minicomputer to use a GUI and cursor. Of course this affects many things in the computer world. This mouse development eventually became an essential requirement for all PCs. Windows OS also requires the use of this tool to be able to handle the system and its menus. In 1980, further developments began to take place. Mice that use balls have a durability problem. A ball that comes in direct contact with the surface can get a lot of dust and dirt on it. Finally, the sensor inside the mouse can be covered with this material. To avoid this, optical mouse was developed. The first prototype only appeared in the 1980s, but the final product only entered the market in 1988. But because many people were pessimistic and used to ball mice, the popularity of the optical mouse was only seen in 1998. The reason for its low popularity at the start of its emergence was price. Optical mice have devices that are more expensive than ball mice. But as time goes by, the production process and efficiency are increasingly developing. Finally, optical mouse has become a popular choice until now.
