History and Meaning of Dance Ranup Lampuan.

Ranup Lampuan Dance is one of Aceh's traditional dances that is most often featured on big and small events in Aceh. This dance is performed by women holding a box of betel which will be given to the guests and the community. Dance Ranup Lampuan is so popular that it is often done when welcoming honorable guests in government or customary activities in Aceh. Ranup Lampuan dance was created in 1959 by Yusrizal as a famous artist of Aceh. This dance is inspired by the habit of the people of Aceh who usually offer betel as a receipt in welcoming honorable guests. This dance comes from the Acehnese language 'Ranup' and 'Lampuan' which means 'Sirih' and 'Container'.
According to some historians, Ranup Lampuan Dance has undergone several phases and processes so seeksist as it is today. Initially, this dance is only played by some female dancers with musical accompaniment. By the year 1959 the dance was innovated by including 3 male dancers in it. Not long, when in 1966 the dance was later modified back to its original procedure. This is done in accordance with the advice of the elders of adat, that is by displaying the female dancers only. Disampimg it, aspect of its long duration then abbreviated so that more suitable and not wasting the time the guests are judged to have a solid flying hours. Finally, in 1972 this dance changes again especially in the music. Originally Ranup Lampuan Dance music is a kind of orchestra or band, the music is then replaced with traditional musical instruments such as; Rampa'i, Serune Kale, Gendrang, and other tools so that the nuances to the Acehan shown more felt. After the change, the existence of Ranup Lampuan Dance continues and is played as it is now.
Ranup Lampuan dance until now serves as a greeting dance honorable guest or the opening of the Aceh custom ceremony. Like the philosophy of his name, this dance is often identical with the betel and puan which in the custom of Acehnese society has a special meaning in it. For the people of Aceh, sirih and puan are symbols of fraternal community. If the guest is offered betel, and enjoy the offer, then it marked the guest is well received and considered brothers with the people of Aceh.
