Baykuşların büyüklüğü, 13-15 cm’lik cin baykuşundan 70 cm’lik puhuya kadar değişir.
En kalın tüylere sahip kuş türüdür.
Baykuş tüylerinin üzerindeki desenler bazı türlerin düşmanlarından kamufle olmasını sağlar.
Baykuş, tüm kuşlar içinde en sessiz uçuş yapandır.
Türkiye’de sekiz baykuş türü bulunur: alaca baykuş, balık baykuşu, ishakkuşu, kır baykuşu, kukumav, orman baykuşu, peçeli baykuş ve puhu.
