Also known as onychomycosis, toenail fungus is a fungal infection that attacks the toenails. Its symptoms include yellow, brown, or white coloration on one or more of the toenails. If you have this condition and you don’t take immediate action, the fungi may spread to other toes and your toenails will crack or thicken.

Luckily, this is a treatable condition and there are many home remedies you can use to treat it. You can also use prescriptions drug available in pharmacies.

Here are some remedies of toenail fungus.

1.   White vinegar and Listerine

The combination of the acidity of the vinegar and the ingredients of Listerine, such as menthol and thymol, makes the environment to be inhospitable to fungi. This treatment works well if you have green nails. To treat toenail fungus at home, combine white vinegar and Listerine in equal proportions, then soak your affected toe in the solution for about 45 minutes to one hour. Do this every day for better results.

2.   Vicks VapoRub

This product has strong antifungal properties because it contains eucalyptus and camphor oil. You can apply it on your toenails using a cotton swab once a day. For it to be more effective, it's better to use it when you are free so you can give it time to dry before putting on your shoes or socks.

3.   Cornmeal

Cornmeal is another important anti-fungal substance.  It has even been used to treat back-spot disease in roses. To use it, pour the oil into a shallow pan then add hot water to it. Add enough water to dissolve it until it forms a paste. Let it cool, then soak your feet into it. You can do this for one hour every week.

4.   Tea tree oil

This product not only treats toenail fungus but also many other skin conditions. It helps to treat toenail fungus fast because it breaks down the fungal cells’ outer layers, thus killing them. To use it, just dab about 2 - 3 drops of the oil onto your affected toes twice a day.

5.   Hydrogen peroxide

By directly wiping your affected toenail with hydrogen peroxide, you can kill all the fungus on the nail. Use a clean cotton swab or cloth to do this. Alternatively, you can mix 1/8 cup of hydrogen peroxide to 4 cups of water. Soak your foot in this solution for about 10 - 20 minutes, rinse your foot with warm water then using a towel.

6.   Oregano oil

Oregano oil works magic because it contains a natural compound called thymol. This compound has strong antifungal properties that will clear the fungi on your toes as soon as possible. Just apply a few drops of oregano oil on your nails two times every day.
