it depends on what you want to see, i for example try to find when i have the time interesting posts even scrolling down for a couple of minutes. in steemchat dont expect much, in my experience its mostly for promoting your posts or if you have a team of people on here that want to just talk. In general chat that as the name suggests its just for general talking a few talk and a few more talk only to a couple of people
try the categories too if you have something specific you like
