🌸 BLASTING DOWN MEMORY LANE - TOP '90'S MUSIC VIDEOS 🌸

in #thealliance6 years ago

I don't know why, but I am obsessed with '90's music. I often spend hours watching '90's videos on YouTube, getting lost in a rabbit hole of grunge, white boy rap, ska and the occasional pop song.

I thought it might be fun to create lists of '90's music for The Alliance readers to enjoy..

So without further ado - let's delve right in!

No Doubt - Don't Speak (1995)

The iconic Gwen and her midriff struck gold with this heartfelt ode to her ex, Tony Kanal. Originally written as a love song, the song was rewritten a few times as the band went through growing pains, and eventually took its present form as a break up song, after Tony broke up with Gwen.

Fun Facts

Don't Speak was the most played song in America in 1996. The music video for Don't Speak was nominated for "Song of the Year" and "Best Pop Performance by a Duo or Group with Vocals" at the 1998 Grammy Awards.

The official music video on YouTube has more than 640 million views. 🤩

Alanis Morissette - You Oughta Know (1995)

✅ Angsty, angry female singing out loud about sex and blowjobs in public (YAS GIRL, THIS IS HOW YOU DO FEMINISM)

✅ Leather pants, long hair

✅ Funky, funky bass line

This song (and video) is everything I love about being a rock chick in 1995. Alanis is rough, raw and says what's on her mind, and I love it. I had this album as a young girl and used to play it with my portable CD player so loud, every day. Grr.

Fun Facts

That funky bassline you hear? That's played by none other than Flea from the Chili Peppers, and Dave Navarro (guitarist from RHCP in the '90's) featured on guitar on the track.

You Oughta Know won "Best Rock Song" and "Best Female Rock Vocal Performance" at the 1996 Grammy Awards. Stick it to the man, Alanis. You go girl.

Bush - Glycerine (1996)

God damn, this is an emotional song! This song takes me right back to the early '00's to school dances, where all the girls had space buns and bare midriffs.

This song is the epitome of the beautiful '90's, with raw emotions on display, and a jagged and distorted video direction.

One of the things I like the most about '90's music is the unpretentiousness of it all. Music videos today are such slick operations, but most videos from the '90's are low budget or shots from live tours. It feels more real to me.

Fun Facts

The awesome music video won the "MTV Video Music Award - Viewer's Choice", at the 1996 MTV Video Music Awards, and was also nominated for "Best Alternative Video."

Snow - Informer (1992)

Let's be clear here - I don't think I ever knew what this guy was saying but I thought it was so freaking funky. licky boom boom down, informer, were literally the only words I knew.

Almost 30 years later, I looked the lyrics up and sang along, realising what he was actually saying. The song is actually written about an incident which occured in 1989, when Snow was accused of murder.

Fun Facts

Snow and his music have been made fun of, immensely, with many "proper" reggae artists calling him "watered down" and "weak", due to the fact that he made commercial success with his music.

Daddy Yankee sampled the song "Informer" in his 2019 hit "Con Calma".

This has been fun, fambalam! I encourage any other family members to are interested in writing for the Alliance account to do so, it is all in the name of community!

I will be back next week with some more fun '90's vibes.

I know it's hard for people to click into the PAL discord (not entirely sure why... just know it's a fact😉)... so you may be able to listen from #thealliance soonly. I've given all the pertinent info to Jack to set it up... though I won't see comments in there...

Disclaimer: I never know what decade Imma do until that morning. LOL! It's too hard to decide early...and then, what if I'm REALLY feeling the 60s but already said I'd do the 80s??? Can't hold myself down like that. 😎

I always post an invite link in thealliance before my show... but Sundays are totes quiet there... I rarely see anyone around. So... no bad feelings if you do stuff on weekends. LOL! I'm more for those playing catch up and doing laundry... Just pure entertainment. 😎... Also known as a 'waste of time'. 🤣
