The Expanse: The Best Sci-Fi Show You Might Not Be Watchin

Remember the Cant!

In the last few days, you may have been hearing a lot of noise being made online about the cancellation of a TV show called The Expanse. The show (based on the on-going book series by James S.A. Corey) is set in the distant future where humanity has colonized the solar system and both personal and political tensions threaten the delicate peace between Earth, Mars and the Asteroid Belt as an unknown, ominous threat looms in the background. Conspiracies unfold, friendships form and all sorts of starships and planets are shown in glorious detail as the characters struggle both with conflict and the harsh realities of space itself. It’s everything a sci-fi fan could want in a show.

Unfortunately, SyFy announced that The Expanse would be ending after the current third season. Naturally, this came as a surprise announcement as the show’s been receiving great critical reception and it has a dedicated fan base that’s been craving more quality serialized science-fiction such as Star Trek, Firefly and the Battlestar Galactica remake series. I count myself among this fan base and it’d be a damn shame for such a fantastic show to end prematurely. There's still so much story from the books to cover and without getting into spoilers, things have been getting very interesting in the third season. Fortunately, I’m not alone on this.

Fans quickly organized petitions and took to social media to get the attention of other parties like Netflix or Amazon to pick up the show. At the time of this writing, over 75,000 people have signed and some even went so far as to set up an airplane banner and fly it over Santa Monica to garner attention!

If you’re a fan of anything science-fiction or big multi-character sprawling story arcs, I can’t recommend The Expanse enough. I’ve heard it described as “Game of Thrones in space” and although it might be a bit of a simplistic comparison, it does have merit to it. The Expanse is full of interesting characters, cool settings, compelling storylines and all the amazing visual elements you’d expect of great sci-fi.

Hopefully, we’ll hear something in the next few days one way or the other. If the cancellation is indeed set, it’ll be a damn shame. But you never know. Brooklyn 99 was canceled and saved in less than 48 hours, so it can happen. Either way, it’s still a great show worth your attention. Have you seen The Expanse yet? More to come,
