Happy 200th Birthday to one of the most underrated Invention
Even though technology has made rapid progress in last century but still there is an invention and it's contribution to the mankind which is still prevailing in today's hi tech world.
I'm sure most of us are not aware but last week bicycle celebrated it's 200th year. So, I thought it would be a good idea to do some research on it and share it with you guys in this post.
First 2 wheeler was invented in Germany in 1817 by Baron Karl Von Drais and the reason behind his invention was death of many horses because of a famine in Europe.
The basic structure of his bicycle was simple with wooden frame and wooden wheels but with no braking system. Yes, you read that write.
To ride and stop the bicycle rider had to use legs since there was no pedaling and braking system in place.
Riders had no other option but to carefully maneuver otherwise the rider was left with non functional legs (just exaggerating) but the point is: it was dangerous. That is the reason it got banned in some countries.
Over the next years no concrete advancements were made till 1860 when a French blacksmith named Pierre Michaux designed pedal.
Then there was something for speed lovers where bicycle had big front wheel and a smaller rear wheel. (How cool was that right) but sadly there were issues with safety.
Finally in 1880, chain driven bicycles were introduced where there was more control on speed and less danger. Also, it was in 1880s when air inflated rubber tyres were used.
After the dawn of new era as expected bicycle innovation continued. Now we have hi tech bikes, e-bikes, solar panel bikes and what not.
Bicycles are not only cost effective but at the same time help a lot in controlling pollution. For people who are dealing with traffic problem I think bicycle is the best alternative to beat traffic and simultaneously save time and money.
Looking at the above chart I feel happy because future of bicycle looks bright and people are opening up to the concept of bike sharing.
And my fitness enthusiasts I know we all like going to fancy gyms but trust me riding bicycle in gym is no way closer to riding bicycle in the open world.
It is good that we have made substantial progress in various aspects of life but at the same time we should make sure to share with our children about these innovations.
Young generation should realize and be thankful to the people who against all odds invented such magical machines so that the lives of the people can be made simple and convenient.
Let's wish Bicycle a very happy 200th birthday and thanks to the people who made this world a better place.
Please share your fond moments with bicycle. For me it has to be how my dad helped me in learning to ride bicycle.
