You're right that in most cases all you need is enough money at the right entrance point, and you can get your message spread across millions of devices without a fact-check. Part of the problem is that "facts" change according to who is doing the checking, so it's important that people have access to various viewpoints. What we're seeing in the world today is that viewpoints that are not convenient, or don't fit with the narrative are being shut down.
