Tech Tips - Run Your Virtual Office on Discord!

in #technology7 years ago (edited)

These days people are looking for the latest and greatest in freemium services to improve productivity. Having worked as a digital nomad for years I've tried a lot of products and can honestly say that Discord is one of the best online platforms I've ever had the pleasure to use.

What is Discord and where did it come from?

According to an article published in 2015 in the popular online magazine 'TechCrunch' it has been around for a while...

Jason Citron, who previously founded and sold the early mobile social gaming network OpenFeint, returned to gaming startups with the launch of Discord in May 2015. This voice and text chat app for gamers — a challenger to incumbents like Skype and Teamspeak — has since grown to 25 million registered users, who are sending 100 million messages per day across its platform. Now, Discord is launching its next product: GameBridge, a set of tools that bring voice and text chat to the games themselves.

I would agree that Discord has been labelled a platform for gamers but in reality it has everything you need to operate as a mobile office in a tech-startup company.

I've worked with several organizations who swear by it for several key reasons. One of the best things about it is that its completely free to use at the moment. Although they have plans to sell stickers and add-ons down the road, they intend to keep it free.

Personally, I'd like to thank Jason for making such an outstanding platform. I find it a crucial piece of my company's infrastructure.

According to a different article published by Business Insider about Discord, it has gone through exponential growth the past few years and many others feel the same.

Meanwhile, Discord is a red-hot app amongst PC gamers, allowing them to chat for free with friends via text or voice no matter what they're playing. From December 2016 to May 2017, Discord went from 25 million users to 45 million, almost doubling in five short months. The company says that growth is still strong.

Discord has a lot of features that will interest people from all walks of life trying to enhance their social networking skills.

In discord you will be required to make a personal account and with that account you can add other users to your list of friends. Beyond that there is functionality to create your own server (company or otherwise), add chat rooms which you can specify permissions on and chat with members via text or voice.

Beyond that you are able to integrate other services like google drive or hackmd.io into your workflow, pasting and pinning links and inserting images and videos into chatrooms and conversations.

TechBlogger Wrap Up

If you don't have a Discord account yet, go to http://www.discordapp.com and make one!

Although there are other services similar to Discord such as Slack and Twitch, in my opinion Discord blows them away completely. Have you used Discord before and if so, how do you like it?

Really a nice messenger.
Already using it.

Same I also use discord, but for its original use or purpose. For gaming :D Also add in bots they help alot

I used Skype, TeamSpeak, Discord before.
But I still prefer Discord :)

Discord android app is the best one I have ever used! Even teamspeak crashes on android but I never had any problem with discord.

I checked out the site, and read this:

All-in-one voice and text chat for gamers that's free, secure, and works on both your desktop and phone. Stop paying for TeamSpeak servers and hassling with Skype. Simplify your life.

"Stop hassling with Skype." That is such a perfect description! Skype is such a hassle! I can never find the simplest thing.

Same with Google Voice. They sure make it hard as hell just find your damn phone number!

should add that the nitro feature is well worth the money to support them and get access to faster servers that they offer. it's like $50 for the year. super reasonable too - oh and also, their video ads are the BEST in the game! :)

.02 for your thoughts. They're worth more, but that's all I'm worth here at the moment.

But I checked out the videos. Totally built for stoners, ha ha.

I added .03 for upvoting this thread, and .02 for the handful of comments I got on here.

Thanks for the post! Thanks for the info. It kind of sounds like an ad. In the best kind of way, not the kind where facebook farms you out.

Thanksm you very much for your help

Yes man...that's totally true! Discord is a great platform and have been working through years as free so that's amazing!

Using this amazing app! I think it's really great whether u are just using it to chat and voice talk to a friend or a group of gamers , or it can be used for anything not really just for gaming , it depends what kind of server u create ! And what's good news is that they are planning to keep it free forever my respects thank u ! :-)
