Will The Human Species Split Into Two In The Future?

The forces of nature are truly remarkable in that, they have given rise to hundreds of millions of species on this planet we call home. Among those, we humans are one, whose journey began tens of millions of years ago.

We hold a special status among our fellow inhabitants though, in that we are the only intelligent species on the planet. Yeah, philosophically one might question that statement especially given our actions, but our curiosity and need for expansion might be proof enough.

Anyways, thanks to our intelligence, for the first time in the history of life, nature's monopoly on the process of evolution is being threatened and given enough time, might be completely taken away.

Increasingly we are building and developing tools and techniques that will allow us to enhance or maintain several parts of our bodies, giving us the power to evolve ourselves the way we see fit.

A Great Divide?

The time frame involved is that of many decades but I think it is inevitable that we begin to tinker with our biological bodies to enhance our capabilities in any way imaginable, to sustain our bodies, to fight off any diseases, with the help of a plethora of biotechnologies that will be available in the future.

Picture having implants to connect to the internet, nanobots to prevent and treat any disease, mechanical body parts far superior to the real ones, artificial organs when the natural ones fail, the ability to alter genes of our offsprings before they are born to give them any desired traits, and so on.

To me, that sounds like a completely different human being and so I like to call it Human 2.0 and it may happen within this century. The idea is really crazy but somehow, I get this feeling that this is the direction we are headed.

As with any technological progress, this will have its pros and cons as well but in my opinion, the cons could really outweigh the pros on this one. I mean, the whole thing could have really grave consequences, maybe even something as big as splitting the species into two.

It sounds like something straight out of a movie about a dystopian future but really think about it. Any such technology would not be cheap and so it would be only the elites who would have access to it. The number of people who could afford it would be a small percentage and thanks to the enhancements, they would only soar further in every way imaginable.

The rest of the people would either have no access or access to only the lower grade "upgrades" that would ensure that they would always be beneath the ones at the top. If such a thing happens, we will have a great divide on our hands where one portion of the species would live like superhumans while the other would live like 'normal humans'.

Today, the latter may sound more attractive but we just can't tell if it would be seen the same way in the future. Maybe it will be seen as a limitation in society that makes you subpar than the superior counterparts.

What would such a world look like? Things are already dire with how the world is today. Imagine a literal split of species!

Sort:

If the power was only in the hands of a few it would lead to total anarchy. Butif everybody could have it then I think things would stay much more peaceful. Although would we be actaully humans if we "upgraded"? What is human? How do we keep the human without taking it out in the processes? All very good questions to ask and questions that need answers as more time goes by getting us closer and closer to this future. Great post as always! I remeber reading your posts a lot, very thought provoking can't wait to go back to it lol. u cool dude

I don't think we would actually be humans, hence the Human 2.0. I guess what makes us humans is everything that is unique to us. Intelligence coupled with emotions, feelings, empathy, whatever one wants to call it. And I think we can still keep a part of that alive even if we upgrade but who know for sure, right?

Anyways, thanks for the kind words man. Really appreciate them :)

Yeah I think I agree with you. and really who knows? Hey np man your work is awesome.

Evolution never stops, your idea could happen in the future.

Yeah it could!

Sure seems like something split between neanderthal and cromagnon man. What happened we may never know, but mutating genes are part of evolution's deal. :):)

Any split in the past would have been nature's doing. But for the first time, we are going to be taking evolution in our own hands!

I think we have been on the verge of separating out into, if not species, then at least different societies. If Human 1 can still mate with and produce offspring with Human 2 are they really a separate species?

Human 2 may seem like an advantage, yet with all the elites power and knowledge, computer viruses still happen, and a lot of them are from no elitist. Computer and information protection is still improving but not completely there yet, if it ever will be.

One thing the early internet and social media has done is show the vast disparity among various levels of society. As time has progressed the level of internet disparity has decreased, but not the level of society disparity. Right now we are in the "Squeaky wheel" phase of society, at least here in the United States, where the loudest most noisy group get their way for awhile thinking that they are the pinnacle of righteousness.

Inner city society is completely different than penthouse society. The people think differently. Rural society is a lot different than City Society, and then real country society is as different to city and rural life as the difference between Inner city and penthouse life. Governments know this and they play each group morals, an ideals against each other.

I think we already have human 2, 3, 4, and 5. They can all procreate with each other, but they can not understand each others drives and motivations.

I totally agree with you that from a societal perspective, there are already n number of humans. Different levels live totally different lives and have different thoughts and perspectives about everything and the disparity is so high that it seems like we are already "different humans".

What I was talking about in the article was from a much more biological perspective, where we will be able to do stuff to our bodies to differentiate from each other and from the next 'level' of humans and how it has the potential to divide the already divided society even more, this time from a biological point of view.

Great thoughts by the way :)
