Is Technology A Double-Edged Sword?
Reading and writing about the various technologies of our time is something I am very passionate about. If you follow my blog, you must already know that I write regularly about the latest happenings in the world of technology.
I often discuss about AI, genetic modification, drone technology, quantum computers, and many other revolutionary technologies that are being worked upon right now and how they will change our lives.
Aside from all the enthusiastic comments I receive about them, I also receive some very concerned ones. Many people have pointed out that most of what is being worked on right now can be used for really nefarious purposes and in some cases might even spell the end of humanity.
I completely agree with that sentiment, though it has always been true and not only of the recent times. Technology is a double edged sword and if it has the power to liberate people, it also has the power to enslave or even destroy them.
Technology Is What We Make of It
Technology is just another tool at our disposal and just as we can use various tools for various purposes, the same can be done with it too. The good and the bad of it, is totally dependent on us.
A chisel can be used to carve the most beautiful statue and it can be used to hurt people as well. Similarly, one could use the internet to be very successful or for other wicked purposes.
This has been true throughout history. I mean, take an example of one the biggest scientific breakthroughs of all time. Albert Einstein’s famous equation, (E = m.c^2), was a major step in understanding the universe, but ultimately it also formed the basic of the atomic bombs that were dropped in Japan.
I think no other example in history can better illustrate how technology will always be a slave to mankind’s whims. The AI or the genetic modification that I keep talking about, will definitely have a lot of very good, life changing implications, but in the wrong hands, well, there is no limit to the evil that can be done with them or with any other cutting edge tech.
Unexpected Consequences
There is a third angle to this whole scenario as well and one that is often overlooked. Sometimes there are unintended consequences of a technology, which simply couldn’t have been foreseen.
You see, we always regard technology as a solution. I mean that’s how it is marketed in today’s world, right? But several times, instead of being a solution, it ends up being a problem.
Take a look at social media today and what it is doing to the newer generations. It has brought up so many different problems like, craving for attention, immediate gratification, loss of valuable time, addiction, among others.
Different social media platforms were designed to bring people together, and while that has been achieved on some level, I can’t help but think that it’s having quite the opposite effect. People somehow seem to be more divided and in conflict, all the time, where real life relationships don’t even mean anything!
A Constant Evolution
Whatever the case may be, one thing is for sure. Technology is like a river. You can divert it and even slow down its current a little but you can never stop it completely.
Mankind never stops and therefore innovations never stop. The future world will be one where technology will be an even more integral part of our lives.
Whether we let it come in the way, or become the way, will depend on us, like it always have. There will always be bad players in the world but that is just a reality we live in.
It’s a constant battle between the forces of good and evil, one that shapes the very world we live in by forcing it to evolve time and again. I guess what I’m trying to say is that, technology is a double-edge sword but so are we.
Answer: Yes, it is
True dat!
It is indeed!
What scares me the most the AI and the robotics industry that is replacing humans nowadays!
And the independent robots that can correct and improve themselves like humans
They freak me out .
I have some of these examples in my account!
Also the technologies used in weapons or lets call it war industry!
Killing and destruction everywhere !
And ih social media too ppl can reach the sky and others can commit suicide cuz of it !
Good post @sauravrungta
Yeah the automation will be a growing problem that we will need to solve. Also, the wars have been a direct result of the corrupt use of technology by different interest groups.
Yes, it's really incredible how AI can evolve to the point that programmers don't know it's code. One such example is DeepMind.
An article I haven't written yet that's on my to-write list is how important it is to create a society full of individuals less likely to use technology for ill, and that involves creating the conditions for the emergence of healthier humans.
Key to achieving this will be the adoption of universal basic income for the reasons I describe in this article.
Basically, if we want a better society, we need to reduce the maladaption of the fight or flight response as a chronic condition, by guaranteeing everyone's basic needs for basic economic security via basic income.
Yeah, the basic income thing should help. People often turn to the dark side because of lack of resources to fulfil even the most basic of needs. So, that might help a little.
Maybe
This dynamic has been going on for a very long time. It is not something new. Perhaps the details of the technology are different. It has its roots in the dichotomy of rationality and spirituality. Or objective reality and subjective reality. Tipping too much either way causes an unhealthy imbalance. Our very brains are constructed with this dichotomy built in. Left brain.. Right brain.. It goes all the way to the root of creation... Great post as usual.
Yeah, completely agreed! :) Thanks!
Definitely technology is a double-edged sword, and it depends on the part who has it. tnx for sharing with us ^^
Thanks for reading :)
Excellent piece... i think we haven't shifted our education system to address some of the concerns... some jobs and degrees would be worthless as automation takes over... I think its vital that programming becomes a life skill that should be thought from an early age... we need to gradually move away from 4 year degrees especially those carry heavy financial burden, a lot of business related careers would be automated as AI fully kicks in... So there needs to be alot of planning and debate, we are actively advancing into a technological age and at the same time taking away the dignity of any man to provide for his family
You make an excellent point. I hadn't even thought about it. The education system of the future will be vital to equip the younger generation to deal with the newer reality we will all share.
Hello @sauraungta, quite an interesting article you have presented before us all. I am a technology geek myself. Overly excited, inquisitive and dependent on technology for carrying out most of my day to day things. To a great extent I do second your opinion that technology is a double sided sword. If used in the right way it's a blessing for the mankind and if misused, can bring down disaster. Once needs to strike a balance. And on the personal front, I am trying to do that. ✌️✌️Peace..!!
Completely agreed!! Thanks for reading man :)
Well every great invention always were double edged sword. But what made them acceptable are their more positive features rather than negative. Same can be said about technology, it has the power to destroy our lives if we allow it to, on the other hand with the help of technology we are developing exponentially. So, it;s a matter of choice.
But I think the reason for concern is Artifical Intelligence. Technology shouldn't ever get control over humans. People are allowing the use of AI, which is actually pretty cool for now, but if we talk about future then there is some reason for concern.
Yeah, as I said. It's always dependent on the whims of man kind. The side of the sword that is chosen, is always based off of our choices and interests.
Thanks for this very nice post! What I ask me always is how the technology evolved so quick in the last 20 years, because before it took so long to do so.
Okay have a nice day and keep up the good work on steemit :)
hah yeah, technology progresses at increasingly fast pace. The next 10 years of innovation will be equivalent to much more than the past 10 years.
Yes your right I think so as well very exciting to see what will come in the future. I just hope that the technology will not take over one day like in Matrix lol have a nice day and keep up the good work you are doing on steemit :)
