The golden calf

My mom used to spend a lot of time on her telephone during my childhood. She was one of seven siblings and kept in contact with them and a whole bunch of people via the landline in our house. It cost quite a lot of money every month and she and my dad had many conversations about this, according to my dad, completely unnecessary expense. He refused to answer the phone or make any use of it, creating a clear distance between himself and the thing that featured so hugely in my mom's life.

He teased her too. In the Bible, the story of the people of Israel creating a statue of a calf from gold is recorded. They tried to replace God in this way worshipping the statue as an idol. Whenever the phone rang in our house my dad would refuse to answer even if he was right next to it. Instead, he would turn to my mother and say, 'Run baby run! The golden calf is bawling!'

This week was a busy one for me and I fondly remembered a time without cell phones. The reason for this reminiscing is that my cell phone's screen cracked so severely that I cannot use it anymore. I have been without a phone since the weekend and it has been a more difficult thing to adapt to than I thought it would be.

Here is a short list of some of the expected and unexpected things that the loss of my phone impacted on.

  • I'm often at a loss as to what the time is.
  • Ginabot's notification's do not reach me as easily
  • I mostly consume daily news via an app on my phone
  • Transactions via crypto wallets are impossible without the pin I receive on my phone
  • Adding new benefeciaries to my banking app is impossible without the pin I receive on my phone
  • I cannot access my email on a new computer without the pin I receive on my phone
  • I mostly accessed Facebook on my phone
  • I mostly accessed weather predictions on my phone
  • I often need to take a photo of something to remember it
  • My phone is my calculator
  • I often use my phone as a torch
  • People cannot get a hold of me except via email. They hate that!

I'm sure the list is longer than this. And I'm sure your list may have something else on it. What would you miss if you lost your phone? Please share it with us in the comments here. There is a @steem-bounty of 3 SBD on this post and I will upvote your comment.

Dear @reonlouw, i am 50 years old guy and i can tell you that i lived more than half of my life without be a slave of phones, but now there are not way, you need smartphone to survive in this world.
I am using only 0,005% of existing apps, you can imagine how you can become slave of it when you are starting to use them?
Everything you want, there is an app, this is crazy and how people cannot become addicted?

Definitely, technology can be very good or very bad depending on how we use it, that is, it is relative.

What I would most miss about running out of phone is taking pictures of any sunrise or sunset, I'm a fan of both.

My phone is my calendar, my schedule ... Without him I would miss during the day haha because I am very messy.

Every time I use my phone it makes me wonder how did the older people live without it. How would they contact to ask where they are and if they're still alive. This is one thing that I appreciate with phones, communication is easier with it.

I would miss a lot of things if I lose my phone. The most important thing is my contacts. Next would be my mobile wallet, gaming, texting and chatting people, social media, my google authenticator(If i lose this it would suck so bad) I really cant imagine losing it already.

Anyway, Thanks for sharing this post! Have a great day!

Until you are without use of a mobile phones for a few days to a week, you never really comprehend how much you need it these days. I also remember back to having no cell phones, only using the landline or a phone box while out.

It is a sure different time we live in compared to the 90's and older!

One feels so confident hahaha that I had not thought what my life would be like without the phone.

I tell you, my phone is the door to enter the house of my relatives, we are all in different countries so video calls are part of my life.

Technology has become the protagonist of our "life" and sadly, we stop sharing and enjoying with our loved ones to be with our phones.

One should disconnect certain days from the phone and enjoy life.

I use the phone in my work, as a camera to capture the most special moments so it would be difficult.

I must say you must be feeling peace somewhere.
The technology advancement have made our life totally dependent on different gadgets. Without them the life is cluless. We forget to hook with our friends, we do not use our wrist watch...there are so many things that we miss them...i can imagine your situation too "life without mobile"
For me I am totally dependent on my mobile for all steemit action..missing out on it...would be a great loss for sure...

I know exactly how you feel @reonlouw

My screen cracked a couple of years ago and the touch screen failed. It caused me all sorts of problems in the immediate and further down the road. I have become very reliant on this piece of kit and a little nervous about losing it again.

I remember my Nan and Grandad's house, they had a lock on the dialer of the house phone. Grandad would get really cross if my Nan was chatting on it, even if she didn't make the call. Also, if anyone asked to use it, Wow!

It is definitely an issue in crypto. All the pins and passwords that are linked to a mobile or just plain stored on it. I'm sure there are people losing their currency all the time due to loss or damage to a smartphone.

Lastly, a camera, torch and a clock. I use it for all three of these things too.

Thanks for posting.
