History of Tech: The First Product Sold Online
Pizza Hut may tell you that the first online purchase was a pizza from Pizza Hut.
In an attempt to claim that they made the first sale online, a few years ago Pizza Hut took to twitter and said " FACT: the first-ever online purchase was a Pizza Hut pizza in 1994. #90skids ". Unfortunately for Pizza Hut they were beaten to this record by 22 years!
By who?
Students from Stanford University and MIT.
When?
Dude, can't you calculate? 1994 - 22 = 1972
What?
Seriously? This should be more obvious than the when! It's college kids we're talking about (also the thumbnail should give it away) it was weed!
Yes lads! The first ever product sold online was weed, all the way back in the 1970's. Ah yes the 1970's, when the air was always fresh, stars were beautiful, I wasn't born and there was no such thing as the internet.
Wait a second! If there was no internet, then how did those stoned college students buy something online?
Well, in the 1970's there was something called ARPANET, which you can think of as a sort of precursor to the internet we know today, and is something that we'll discuss in a later episode of History of Tech.
I'm looking to make History of Tech a weekly series, where I'd bring you awesome facts on the History of the thing that apparently will one day take over the world, Technology. So if you would like to see this series please show me your support by upvoting, following, commenting and resteeming.
