WE ARE BEING SWAMPED BY INVADING HOARDS

in #teamnz6 years ago (edited)

Here in New Zealand tourist season has just started, and as well as the usual constant stream of planes landing, there is now a multitude of giant cruise liners coming into the harbour.

This is a photo I took yesterday on our back lawn, of our weedy old chimney (It's so 1928, but we never use it because we have air con), along with a cruise liner and plane.

What do tourists do? - They take selfies! And hopefully they also spend lots of money buying toy kiwis and sheepskin rugs.

Thankfully NZ has a natural border wall - we have thousands of kilometers of sea in all direction, with Australia being our closest neighbour at over 4000k away, (apart from six small island countries ranging from 1450k to 3700k away - Norfolk Island, New Caladonia, Fiji, Vanatu, Solomon Islands, and Tavalu) and if any Aussies make it here we can tell them to bugger off back home - unless they are tourists, in which case we can be nice to them for a few days.

At least in the city, you don't meet them head on because they are driving on the wrong side of the road.
You have to be kind to Aussies, they need something else to look at apart from scraggy gum trees and sugar cane

Thankfully tourists in Wellington don't usually drive - but at least Aussies know which side of the road to drive on, unlike 55% of the rest of world!

Typical NZ driver in America...

NASTY!

That happens quite a bit here but the opposite way round so we have signs for tourists

The Aussies need all the sympathy they can get.
As you say, at least they are on the proper side of the road.

You also have incredibly deep ocean floors, so if anyone was trying to drive to New Zealand, that would have a rough time.

So, what kind of tourists do you get?
Lots of young women?
Lots of families?
Lots of honeymooners?

The government do reports on tourists constantly because after farming, it's our biggest industry.

I was only joking about the Aussies - they are our number one source of tourists - followed by China second and America third.

And ages - a full range from kids to grandparents. 25-43 is the top age range, but there is a pretty even spread.

LOL. that last part cracked me up.

You mean about being nice to Aussies? - Yeah we do really struggle with that :)

It's not easy! - Bloody Aussies...

ERm yes, that part lol.

I hate myself for wanting to be part of that tourist hoards someday, but I have a fascination with New Zealand because i live in Portugal....on it's antipode. Also i would love to visit Australia to see the native habitats of the Acacia sp. that are invasive here in Portugal.

It's a long way but an awesome trip - just don't try to do it in a week - there is a lot here packed in to an area not much bigger than the United Kingdom - and Aussie is just vast...

Looks beautiful behind the picture frame you are displaying, and it is very beautiful.
