Powa Moves #4: Posts from TeamGirlPowa
Chag sameach to anyone observing Shavuot, Ramadan mubarak to our friends observing Ramadan, and happy Sunday to all!
This is the fourth edition of Powa Moves, our English-language curation post boosting some of the great writing and art posted under the #teamgirlpowa tag. Our team members put out some wonderful work, and we want to boost it. As Audre Lorde said, "When you reach out and touch other human beings, it doesn't matter whether you call it therapy or teaching or poetry." We love sharing your wondrous worlds!
That time I almost lead-poisoned my unborn baby and myself... by @orangina
In this post, @orangina considers the dangers that surround us, and the resilience of human beings. With a baby on board, it can be scary to contemplate all the potentially threatening aspects of life, but it’s important, and that reflection can lead us to gratitude.
I thought about Flint, Michigan and all the children and families whose lives are forever changed for the worse by the effects of lead poisoning. Anything I had just stupidly done to myself and my fetus was nothing compared to the disaster of Flint, but I was suddenly very afraid. You can’t fix lead poisoning.
Limited mobility | Unlimited stories: what is a Spoonie and am I one too? by @soyrosa
This post by @soyrosa discusses life with a disability, and explains ‘spoon theory,’ a way of describing to non-disabled people what it is like to exist in the world as a disabled person.
Now of course we all have limited resources, but there's a difference between feeling low in energy and being tired but being able to 'push through anyway', and literally not being able to get home, take a shower, or cook your meal because you've already spent your last spoon.
If you think fat means unfit, you are wrong by @shawnamawna
Here’s another great post from the badass @shawnamawna, about coming to love her body through exercise, with the support of trainers and a doctor.
I can now run a faster mile.
This happened because my doctor looked at my chart and at me and didn’t see “fat” and “can’t” even when I was fat and couldn’t. He didn’t see my weight as the reason I was struggling. It never was. For me, weight gain was a symptom of a different struggle.
Reborn by @tezmel
This is a lovely poem about struggling with external pressure and feeling less than, and choosing to embrace oneself.
Strength is hers
as she embraces her scars
peeling out each label
they ever gave
Music is My Joy - Day 123 - Daily Haiku - and a Tribute to Tom Lehrer's Comic Genius by @crescendoofpeace
txt
Tom Lehrer wrote entirely original songs, had a nice singing voice, and was quite a good pianist.
And, because he was highly intelligent and an excellent observer of human nature, he often took his cues from the headlines of the day, meaning that the more you know about 1950s and 1960s pop culture and history, the funnier his songs are, even though many are black humor.
To Be Adored-100 Days of Poetry Challenge: Day Seventy Two by @trucklife-family
A sweet poem from @trucklife-family about a transcendent experience of love and intimacy.
my memories of old
creating doorways to my soul.
My very existence,
so raw and exposed,
