Shrink and Sink | Telugu |
This is an unusual Cartesian Diver in which you do not use a dropper. You will need a bottle full of water, balloon and a metal ball. You can also use cycle ball bearings or marbles. The purpose of the ball is to make the balloon heavy. Push the ball in the balloon then fill it with a little air and then tie a knot on its mouth. The balloon should be just heavy enough so that it can just float in water. Now gently push the balloon in a 2-liter bottle half full of water. Add water to top-up the bottle. Then screw on the lid tightly. On pressing the bottle gently from the outside the balloon will SHRINK and SINK. On releasing the bottle pressure the balloon will rise up. As you press the bottle – the balloon being a close system SHRINKS thus reducing the buoyancy from below. So it SINKS. On releasing pressure the balloon EXPANDS which increases buoyancy and it floats on top. This work was supported by IUCAA and Tata Trust.
