The Swan with Two Necks - A Tasteem Review
It has been several weeks since we hiked around the Pendleton area of East Lancashire, concluding in a huge need to eat and drink whatever was on offer at whatever venue was in sight.
The Swan with Two Necks public house was that place in this instance but this was not the first time we had frequented this country pub.
Years can dull the memories of a place, especially if it was mediocre on the previous visit but we were willing to give it another crack and so sat ourselves down in the beer garden located at the rear.
If I can say something positive, then the beer garden is large, spacious and nicely laid out.
I went inside and attempted to order some food and drinks and was told presumptuously to ‘not to wait' as there was a 45-minute queue by some bloke who may have been the landlord.
This took me by surprise and I looked around to find the place somewhat busy, but not packed to the hilt.
The Swan with Two Necks boasts openly about its awards but are they for the beer, food or customer service? Possibly not the latter.
I explained to @bingbabe that they didn’t really want our business but she was too knackered to go anywhere else, forcing me back inside on threats of death and starvation by other means.
I had no choice and so meekly crept back inside.
The mean-looking would be landlord was gone; was this my chance to order food and possibly get fed?
I approached an unfriendly looking middle-aged woman who took my drinks order, AND food though she told me, ‘It may take a while'.
A much better response I felt, though a smile would have been nice.
Despite all these awards, the food on offer was quite plain and basic, myself ordering Plate Meat Pie and Chips, with @bingbabe trying the Cheese and Onion Pie and Chips with Mushy Peas (ugh).
Plain food is fine in my book if it’s good.
I failed to photograph the menus on this occasion but the meals were around £11 each, not overly expensive.
Our food arrived much earlier than expected, delivered by the young friendly waitress and the older unfriendly one. Well, at least there was one friendly face!
I can still taste the pastry of this pie in my mouth if I think about it enough. Imagine basic suet? This is what the pastry tasted like, the contents of meat being only slightly better. The chips were OK but that’s the best I can rate them.
@bingbabe informed me of a similar suet flavour though her cheese interior content looked a lot better than mine.
Was this food really home-baked? I can't imagine this being the case unless the cook learned his trade from a bunch of bricklayers or scaffolders.
Now I know why The Swan with Two Necks never got a second chance unless it was a case of starving to death or eat what’s on offer.
At a guess, I would say all these awards are for the different beers that they serve. There were plenty to choose from.
As far as the food is concerned, I would probably rather have visited KFC, and this is not sour grapes over the grumpy landlord's attitude. It simply was far below par.
I cannot recommend The Swan with Two Necks for any kind of gastronomic pleasures, but some of those ‘different' beers with several bags of crisps might work well, while sitting in the pleasant beer garden.

compare with KFC? hmm, it seems that the place doesn't really recommended and just throws money away.
Thanks for sharing your review with Tasteem.

Not everywhere can be good, I just tell it as I see it. KFC is hit and miss in the UK, but I would still have preferred to eat there than this pub.
The tables in the front look nice, but the garden patio looks much more inviting. I had to google suet as I was not sure what it was. Now I completely understand why you could not give a strong recommendation.
I wouldn't like to sit on the front as there is no gap between the tables and the road. A dusty tractor comes up and your food is full of dust. This is a rural location.
Not all reviews can be 'good food', but I try and find something positive.
I don't know about you, but I love KFC. We really don't eat out as much as we used to, but being able to go to KFC is a rare treat for me. This place looks pretty meh all the way around. Nice review. They can't all be winners :)
KFC is different over there, or used to be. Do they still do the Rotisserie chicken? It was like that in AZ.
Not that I know of. You can get those at pretty much every grocery store for around $4 or $5 these days though.
That food looks gross, honestly, I don't even rate the chips, just bog standard frozen and outrageous for £11 a throw. We had a really nice lunch yesterday - jumbo cod and chips and peas/mushy peas - £10 for two. They even asked if my mate wanted beans as she said no to any kind of peas and the chips were fab (so was the fish). Plus drinks, it only came to £14.30 and I had to go back to the bar to check that I had ordered two portions of fish and chips.
You're right, it's a very pleasant garden. Maybe the landlord had had a row with the missus.
LOL, it could very well be.., but as you say ... the food!
I guess it's a bit of a captive audience - everyone is ravenous by the time they get there.
The beer garden does trump the food judging on the photos alone. I'll cross this one off the list then!
The bloke behind the bar is the grumpy bugger. I think he really doesn't want to serve food, but pubs don't survive in the UK now on just beer. Those times are now gone.
That is true. Food must be a right hassle at times but it does seem that most of the popular ones (e.g. still open) serve food.
I'm still confused about CCC, I used the #creativecoin tag for this post as I felt it told a story as well as a simple review.
You have supported it with your .ccoin account and it was voted by @derangedvisions but @shanibeer thinks that maybe these posts should not fit the criteria.
My @tasteem reviews are sometimes simply that, but can be more on other occasions. I wish it was all black and white. What is your take?
👍 be good to have more clarity. I was thinking about this just now on my way home from work ... I was thinking about it from the user experience and what would make a really high quality feed that someone would enjoy reading. Who do we want to attract and how do we keep and increase the value of the coin?

I have seen some of the tasteem posts come through creative coin and they were pretty bad and I flagged them for abuse of the tag, but this post here goes well above just being a review post. This is more of a journey using many different photographs and great story telling to tell about the experience. This is my eyes sets the bar for all other @tasteem posts to try and hit.
Well thanks.. your my best friend now! heh.., I do try and tell a story via a review, that is if there is one to tell.
Sometimes nothing happens besides the consumption of food and it's simply a review. I'll bear that in mind for future ones, and to use.. or not to use.

Photography, short story, creative writing - I think the review could fall into these but I am not a mod and could see their being a discussion on food review.
I would say keep using the tag for now :)
Alas the pub that does food is so often doing food as an add on to the beer rather then a true offering. The plates don’t even look particularly inspiring when you receive them either. Definitely a fair review - it looks like a good place to visit if you are thirsty, but not really if you are hungry. !COFFEEA 15
