For some of us it might be wise to buy crypto's anonymously, just a VPN or TOR will not help you to be completely safe.

The best option is to use TAILS linux, a specially developed purely privacy driven version of Linux that can be booted on any computer without affecting the computer (thus being the host's OS). it has all the functionality you need and since it is a fresh OS after you install it on a USB drive it has no viruses or malware in it.

In addition to buying them privately and anonymously Meyrep said wisely store them on a hardware wallet, do not keep your coins in an exchange or a hotwallet those are inherently unsafe.

Understand as well that if you use a credit card or bank transfer to buy Bitcoins or other crypto's IRS or the tax service in your country might know that you possess cryptocurrencies. Depending on local rules this might have repercussions.
